Its Origins
Tony Bish is a legend of New Zealand winemaking who spent decades making such iconic wines as Sacred Hill's Rifleman's Chardonnay. Now he is channeling his Chardonnay expertise into his own labels, which he produces in a stylish urban winery he has set up in Napier. Much of his wine is aimed at delivering classy examples of the the rich and creamy, 'old school' style of Chardonnay. But Tony's incredible touch and experience ensures that each wine is balanced and refined — even with all their big, bold appeal. Meanwhile, Tony's ongoing experimentation in style and technique is producing results such as his deliciously un-oaked "Golden Egg" Chardonnay, and his super premium "Zen" Chardonnay, which is made in an incredible egg-shaped oak vessel.
What The Critics Say
96/100 Raymond Chan Reviews, Candice Chow
"The nose is elegant and complex, with aromas of soft flint stone, brown butter overlying citrus, stonefruit and hazelnut. Medium-bodied, aromas of grapefruit, lemon and starfruit entwined with minerals, delicately portioned flint, hazelnut and spice. The aromatics are lifted with an airiness, and a sherbety tension binds and persists in a linear, lasting finish. This Chardonnay possesses a mineral core, and a beautiful tension reflects a sense of place and winemaking style. Match with butter-poached langoustine and turbot over the next 5-7 years. Handpicked from Two Terraces Vineyard in Mangatahi, 100% Mendoza clone, whole bunch pressed, only free run juice progressed to ferment in Taransaud fine grained 3-year seasoned barriques, 50% new, indigenous yeasts ferment, underwent spontaneous MLF. Aged for 11 months, barrel selected. Unfined and unfiltered, further aged 6 months in bottle." Drink 2025 - 2032
96/100 Wine Orbit, Sam Kim
"Offering finesse with enticing complexity, the wine shows ripe peach, Gala apple, lemon peel, nougat, and almond meal nuances on the nose. The concentrated palate delivers a plush mouthfeel, accompanied by a refined texture and bright acidity, finishing impressively long and captivating." Drink 2026 - 2038
95/100 Outstanding, Cameron Douglas MS
"A youthful and engaging bouquet with aromas of gun-flint and citrus, fresh peach and grapefruit peel, apple and a lees-based complexity. Delicious on the palate, dry and textured, a fine lees, tannins and phenolics frame core fruit flavours that reflect the bouquet. Youthful still with a tautness and salivating finish." Drink 2025 - 2029
