2022 Astrolabe Wrekin Late Harvest Chenin Blanc 375ml

This outstanding label was Just awarded the NZ Sweet Wine of the Year by The Real Review, judged by a panel including Masters of Wine like Bob Campbell and Stephen Wong. A seriously good sticky from Marlborough. Finalist for 'Best Sweet Wine of the Year' (only three wines made the final) in the Real Review. Chenin Blanc makes a wonderful dessert wine, but this superb style is all too rare in New Zealand. Astrolabe's is a "Late Harvest", i.e. not too syrupy sweet and instead deliciously "edgy". Perfect for fruit desserts and cheeses, this sweety is a delight.

Its Origins

Astrolabe was created in 1996 by winemaker Simon Waghorn, the culmination of a career that began in South Australia in 1982. Winemaking later led Simon and his family from Te Kauwhata to Gisborne, where he specialised in Chardonnay, and eventually to Marlborough where in 1996 he and his wife Jane Forrest-Waghorn joined with old friends Paul Davenport and Sally Lewis to have a go at their own label…and so began Astrolabe. Today they work with a number of growers scattered all over Marlborough, from Awatere valley to the Kekerengu coast to the Wairau Valley, developing a wide portfolio of iconic wines that celebrate the varieties and terroirs of Marlborough.

What The Critics Say

NZ Sweet Wine of the Year and 94/100 in The Real Review, Stephen Wong MW

"Piercingly sweet spicy aromas of lemon, honey and ginger syrup. The voluptuous, unctuous palate is intensely sweet with mint, peanut brittle and concentrated tropical fruit yet also a certain lightness of body. A note of coconut settles on the long, sweet fi nish. This has a long life ahead of it but is equally a decadent delight now and any time over the next two decades." Drink 2024 - 2042

5 Stars Outstanding, Michael Cooper

“Already a delightful mouthful, the vigorous 2022 vintage (5*) was grown in the Wrekin Vineyard, in the Southern Valleys. Bright, light gold, it is fragrant and rich, with concentrated, peachy, citrusy, gently honeyed fl avours and a fi nely poised, sweet, crisp, lasting fi nish. Vibrant, with lovely delicacy, richness and harmony, it’s a drink now or cellaring proposition.”

5 Stars Yvonne Lorkin

"From one of New Zealand’s premium chenin blanc vineyards comes this nectarine and yellow plum-packed sweetie that has an incredibly fresh core of citrus and hints of honeysuckle. I love how zesty and energetic this wine is, sweet but vibrant and beautifully balanced."
