Its Origins

Astrolabe Winemaker Simon Waghorn has this to say about Durvillea: “All along Marlborough’s coast, clinging to rocks at low tide is the seaweed Durvillea. We know it as bull kelp or rimurapa. As a young man at university I studied seaweed. Named for the captain of the Astrolabe, Durvillea seaweed is my quintessential emblem of our wild coast. The Durvillea grapes are grown in the Waihopai, Wairau and Awatere Valleys of Marlborough. The grapes are harvested at precisely the right moment and I preserve the purity and intensity of flavour in my winemaking. Durvillea is Astrolabe’s little sister label. This provides us with the opportunity to offer another range of classic Marlborough wines from our Astrolabe vineyards.”

What The Critics Say

93/100 Bob Campbell MW (2021 vintage)

"An equal blend of pinot noir and pinot gris. Dry, fruity rosé with tree fruit, peach, pear and apple flavours that are supported by gentle acidity. A crisp and refreshing rosé with appealing purity."

4 Stars Michael Cooper (2019 vintage)

"Offering great value, the 2019 vintage, grown in the Awatere Valley, is a 50:50 blend of Pinot Noir and Pinot Gris. Bright, light pink, it is crisp and lively, with good body, strong watermelon and spice flavours, and a crisp, fully dry finish.”
