2021 Astrolabe Marlborough Rose
Astrolabe was created in 1996 by winemaker Simon Waghorn, the culmination of a career that began in South Australia in 1982. Winemaking later led Simon and his family from Te Kauwhata to Gisborne, where he specialised in Chardonnay, and eventually to Marlborough where in 1996 he and his wife Jane Forrest-Waghorn joined with old friends Paul Davenport and Sally Lewis to have a go at their own label…and so began Astrolabe. Today they work with a number of growers scattered all over Marlborough, from Awatere valley to the Kekerengu coast to the Wairau Valley, developing a wide portfolio of iconic wines that celebrate the varieties and terroirs of Marlborough.
What The Critics Say
5 Stars The Wine Writer, Angie Atkinson
“I am a sucker for a pretty label, and Astrolabe have some of the prettiest. This wine is a little ray of sunshine through rose tinted glasses. Aromas and fl avours of strawberries and cream, raspberries and watermelon, and freshly picked flowers. A bold palate bursting with sweet citrus and apple, bright acidity and a long, clean finish.”
93/100 Bob Campbell MW
“A blend of pinot noir 55% and pinot gris 45% from the Awatere Valley and Kekerengu Coast areas of Marlborough. A creamy-textured wine with pear and cherry fl avours. Dry with good palate weight and refreshing and lengthy finish." Drink 2021 - 2024
Very Good to Excellent in Otago Daily Times, Mark Henderson
"Pale rose petal. Powerful, expressive nose, fragrance draws you in, fl itting between dried strawberry, peach & banana skin, a little savoury nuance adding to the interest. Good palate weight, creamy initially, flowing to a more crunchy grainy texture with a bittersweet element adding intrigue to the close. bone dry and should be bang on with food."
