A premium new white from an exciting region in Portugal. This is the estate white from a house in Portalegre that was recently acquired by the Douro-based Symington portfolio. With local varieties and expert winemaking, the Souto white is a seafood dinner wine that is well worth a swirl. Its Origins

Symington began when Andrew James Symington established himself in Porto in 1882. His subsequent acquisition of three important Port houses Warres, Dows, and Grahams became a legacy passing to his three sons, while many further acquisitions accrued a family portfolio of top quality estates whose practices and reputations have endured until the present day. "The 207-hectare Quinta da Fonte Souto was acquired by the Symington family in 2017 and is their first vineyard outside the Douro. Lying on the slopes of the São Mamede Range at an elevation of 500 metres in the Alentejo subregion of Portalegre, the property benefits from cooler and wetter conditions than the hot Alentejo plain." What The Critics Say

93/100 James Suckling

"Lots of lemon zest and stone character with some fresh herbs such as lemongrass. Medium to full body. Layered and creamy. Dried white peach. Lots of dried citrus. A blend of arinto and verdelho. Drink or hold."

91/100 Wine Enthusiast, Roger Voss

"The wine, from the northern Alentejo, is full of ripe white fruits and rich. It has a vibrant white fruit character that gives the wine weight as well as fine acidity. Produced by the Symington family, the wine is ready to drink."

17/20 JancisRobinson.com, Julia Harding (2017 vintage)

"From the Symingtons' new estate in Portalegre, northern Alentejo, at 500 m. 75% Arinto, 25% Verdelho. Fermentation begins in stainless-steel vats but immediately after alcoholic fermentation commences, part of the must is transferred to 500-litre French oak barrels. The must is left in contact with the lees with frequent bâtonnage. 60% of the blend was fermented and aged 8 months in new 500-litre oak barrels (French oak and from Central Europe and acacia wood), in contact with the lees. pH 3.3. Rich and leesy on the nose, with the oak influence evident in the mealy aroma but all in harmony with ripe citrus and green fruits. Powerful and intense on the palate, full bodied, spice on the tip of your tongue. Creamy texture, mouth-filling fruit but still very fresh. There's a woody/cedary quality too. The Arinto gives a zest to the fruit in this wine that you could drink now but should age well. Long, more savoury finish. (JH)."
