2023 Elephant Hill Hawkes Bay Chardonnay
Grape
Chardonnay
Its Origins
Reydan and Roger Weiss first fell in love with the beauty of Te Awanga when visiting from Germany in 2001. Together they envisaged owning a state-of-the-art winery, merging the traditional values of winemaking with an innovative approach and contemporary style to produce exceptional wines to savour and enjoy. With the majestic elephant as their namesake and nestled against a backdrop of rolling hillsides, Elephant Hill spans over 25 hectares of vineyards producing classical, aromatics whites and world-class reds, helmed by winemaker Steve Skinner.
What The Critics Say
93/100 Raymond Chan Reviews, Candice Chow
"Bright, even, pale yellow. The nose is softly full, with aromas of stonefruit, citrus, soft blossom, and a touch of shortbread. Medium-full bodied, the aromas of lemon sherbet, grapefruit, and apricot entwined with delicate spice and shortbread. The acidity is enticing and enlivening, providing tension to a creamy, weighty palate. This Chardonnay is tantalising, contrasting acid tension and a creamy, plushy mouthfeel. Match with turbot and lemon chicken over the next 3-5 years. Fruit from 69% Sea vineyard in Te Awanga and 31% Earth vineyard in Bridge Pa Triangle, fermented in a mix of tank and barrel, partial MLF and extended time on lees. 19% aged in new French oak barrique for 11 months. 13% alc. 18.5/20 pts (93 pts) Jul 2024 RRP $34." 93/100 Wine Orbit, Sam Kim
"Elegant and complex, the inviting bouquet shows white flesh peach, lemon peel, nougat and hazelnut aromas, followed by a finely textured palate delivering juicy fruit flavours with well-pitched acidity, finishing long and harmonious. Beautifully styled and expressed with finesse. At its best: now to 2028. $34.00. www.elephanthill.co.nz. June 2024." Drink 2024 - 2028
92+/100 Cameron Douglas MS
"Bright, refreshing and precise with a bouquet and palate of white peach and sweet grapefruit, there’s an orange and vanilla custard idea, then a mineral white flowers lift. Fine fruit tannins, fine lees and plenty of acidity fill the palate with a satin texture and fleshy mouthfeel. A lower new oak layer puts emphasis on the core fruit impressions. Balanced and well made with best drinking from late 2024 through 2028+."
