2021 Rene Rostaing Cote Rotie La Landonne

94 Points Decanter
In stock
A premium Syrah from one of the world's finest producers and most sought-after vineyards. La Landonne is on the darker, iron-rich soils of the Cote Brune. This wine offers the site's deep-toned fruits and savoury and mineral power, but thanks to the house preference for generous ripeness (not over-ripeness), it retains a poise that is beautiful and classical. This will only improve for two decades or so. Allocations are very limited, so collect now!

Its Origins

Legal academic, property dealer and vigneron, René Rostaing crafts some of the finest Côte Rôties on the market today. He has owned 2 hectares in the Côte Blonde and La Landone since the 1970s but fortune has blessed him through his inheritance of four hectares of superbly sited vineyards from his father in law Albert Dervieux and another 1.4 hectares of particularly old vines from his uncle Marius Gentaz. He now has 7.4 hectares which in Côte Rôtie terms is a significant holding. Rostaing is firmly in the modernist camp of Côte Rôtie producers, destemming the majority of his fruit and being one of the first producers to ferment using vinomatics (horizontal automatic vinifiers). However he dislikes the overt taste of new oak and uses a maximum of 15% in the maturation process. All the wines are bottled unfiltered.

What The Critics Say

94/100 Decanter, Matt Walls

"Graphite, iron and pencil lead come before the blackberry fruit here – a very mineral aromatic expression, almost austere. Medium-bodied but with good presence on the palate and some sweetness to the berry fruits. A compact, dry and mineral expression. La Landonne is always strict, but this really is austere. The whole-bunch element is marked, and the tannins are fine and plentiful but very tense and dry. This needs a long time, don't drink it too young. The only single-vineyard bottlings in 2021 will be La Landonne and Côte Blonde - and that's if they are not eventually blended into Ampodium." Drink 2030 - 2045

92-93+/100 Jeb Dunnuck

"The 2021 Côte Rôtie La Landonne brings much more structure. Darker fruits, mulberries, ground pepper, leather, and earth are just some of the nuances, and it hits the palate with medium body, building tannins, and good overall density and concentration. All Syrah that was not destemmed, it's going to need 4-5 years of bottle age."

17.5/20 JancisRobinson.com, Alistair Cooper MW

"Bright, juicy nose, a little spicy – white pepper, plums and spice. Very fine tannins. Saline. Good density of fruit as well and a savoury, leafy note on the finish. Refined, restrained but still with a tight structure. Long, and will provide so much pleasure in a light style. Cask sample. (AC)." Drink 2025 - 2035
