2021 Rene Rostaing Cote Rotie Cote Blonde

Grape
Usually 97% Syrah, 3% Viognier
Its Origins
Legal academic, property dealer and vigneron, René Rostaing crafts some of the finest Côte Rôties on the market today. He has owned 2 hectares in the Côte Blonde and La Landone since the 1970s but fortune has blessed him through his inheritance of four hectares of superbly sited vineyards from his father in law Albert Dervieux and another 1.4 hectares of particularly old vines from his uncle Marius Gentaz. He now has 7.4 hectares which in Côte Rôtie terms is a significant holding. Rostaing is firmly in the modernist camp of Côte Rôtie producers, destemming the majority of his fruit and being one of the first producers to ferment using vinomatics (horizontal automatic vinifiers). However he dislikes the overt taste of new oak and uses a maximum of 15% in the maturation process. All the wines are bottled unfiltered.
What The Critics Say
95/100 Decanter, Matt Walls
"Relatively pale this year. It shows a floral expression of violets, and in the mouth it’s light-bodied, fresh and with good acidity. The tannins are much friendlier than La Landonne, it's quite a light and gentle Côte Blonde this year, but the balance is good even if the concentration is fairly light. This will drink well young. It saw four weeks in tank, 18 months in oak, using limited new oak, natural yeasts, and as many stems as possible. The only single-vineyard bottlings in 2021 will be La Landonne and Côte Blonde - and that's if they are not eventually blended into Ampodium." Drink 2025 - 2035
93-94/100 Jeb Dunnuck
"Slightly more open and expansive (as usual), the 2021 Côte Rôtie Côte Blonde has a beautiful core of black raspberry-like fruits as well as plenty of floral, spicy, gamey nuances. Round, supple, and medium-bodied on the palate, it brings more charm than most in the vintage and is going to be a terrific Côte Rôtie that will shine with just short-term cellaring."
93/100 Vinous, Nicolas Greinacher
"Like in 2022, the 2021 Côte-Rôtie Côte Blonde fermented with 100% wholeclusters. Raspberry, cranberry, black cherry, cedar, crushed violets and stemmy undertones are all nicely delineated. Medium-bodied and concentrated, myrating might seem a little conservative, but the 2021 does not possess the samesubstance or length as other recent vintages. Nonetheless, it offers plenty of freshness and won’t need as much time to come around." Drink 2027 - 2035
