2020 Domaine Janasse Chateauneuf du Pape Blanc

94 Points Decanter
In stock
A great Chateauneuf white that offers a huge sense of body with definite poise. Opulent stone fruit with bright acidity offers mineral, floral and anise nuance. Grown on sandy-clay soils, the Grenache Blanc and Clairette are fermented in tank for clear flavours, with the Roussanne adding texture and complexity through fermentation and aging in largely new oak. This depth, balance and finesse makes Janasse's Chateauneuf Blanc one of those real high-points of great white wine.

Its Origins

Domaine de la Janasse was established in 1973 by Aimé Sabon. Brother and sister team of Christophe and Isabelle Sabon continue to work wonders at Janasse, and farm 80 hectares of vineyards spread over a number of wine appellations: Châteauneuf du Pâpe, which is all located in the north-east of the appellation in the commune of Courthézon to be precise, Côtes du Rhône, Côtes du Rhône Village, but also Vin de Pays de la Principauté d'Orange and Vin de table. Concrete tanks are used for the Grenache and oak for the Syrah and Mourvèdre; in other words, everything is fairly traditional; it is the quality of the raw materials which is so impressive and for that reason alone, leaving aside the clear skill and vision of the Sabons, that we are delighted to take on these excellent wines in our listings.

What The Critics Say

94/100 Decanter, Matt Walls

"Little touches of lardo on the nose, this is fresh, full-bodied, rich, but not overly concentrated and with a long finish. Classic style, well-judged oak (just 10% new), persistent and very well made. Grown on sand in La Crau and La Janasse. Drink 2022-2027"

17/20 JancisRobinson.com, James Lawther MW

"60% Grenache Blanc, 20% Roussanne, 20% Clairette. Aged seven months in concrete tank (80%) and new and old oak (10% each). Subtly and agreeably toasty, the oak well integrated and supporting the fruit. Full, round and broad across the palate. Lots of fleshy fruit but stays harmonious and fresh. Best with food. (JL)." Drink 2022 - 2028

95/100 Decanter, Matt Walls (2019 Vintage)

"Full-bodied, very intense on the palate, great impact and lovely driving acidity with a tangy, intense finish. Great definition and drive. Really dynamic and delicious. The alcohol is a little raised and the oak quite forthright, but this is such a dynamic, vivid white Châteauneuf. Grown on sandy-clay soils of lieux-dits La Crau and La Janasse. Roussanne component aged for seven months in barrel, 75% new. Drink 2021-2030"
