2020 Produttori Barbaresco Riserva Rabaja

97 Points Antonio Galloni's Vinous

The definitive expression from what may be Barbaresco's quintessential vineyard. Back in the 1970s, Rabaja was the single vineyard which broke Produttori into the top rank of Piedmont producers, which helped the vineyard itself to define the focused but complex style for which Barbaresco is now so widely known. Located on mixed soils at the crux of the two main ridges which carry the top Cru sites, the Produttori Rabaja is all things to all Barbaresco lovers.

Its Origins

"Rabajà produces a quintessential Barbaresco, one of the most complete and balanced of the single vineyards. The vineyard lays at the conjunction of the two main ridges that form the Barbaresco village, one starting at Rabajà and going West towards the Tanaro River (with progressively less calcium and higher fertility in the soil) and the other one that goes from Rabajà to Ovello, South to North (with higher calcium content in the soil). The meeting of these two different soils give to Rabajà its incredible complexity. Bordering both Asili and Muncagota it combines the personality of those two great vineyards with and extra richness due to the South/West warm exposure. First produced as a single vineyard in 1971." It took a sympathetic local priest to realise the only way for the community of Barbaresco to survive, in the poverty of the late 1950's, was for the winemakers to form a co-operative. The first 19 members made their wine in the church basement, but it didn't take long for this idea to provide them with solvency as well as solidarity. Quality too, as a more secure income allowed the individual growers to maintain the high standards they aspired to. Over decades the co-operative grew to it's current membership of 52, during which time it also developed an extensive and almost bewildering array of single vineyard offerings. Until recently the traditional labelling and less-than-dynamic global marketting strategy meant Produttori was strictly the preserve of experts. Nowadays however, as the world trawls Piedmont for both it's obvious and it's hidden gems, Produttori's delightfully backward labelling and proud obsession with qualtity are revealing it as one of the world's most profoundly undervalued wine treasures.

What The Critics Say

97/100 Vinous, Antonio Galloni

“The 2020 Barbaresco Riserva Rabajà is another stellar wine in this range. Dark and explosive, the 2021 possesses notable richness to match its dark, brooding personality. Black cherry, plum, leather, cloves, menthol, licorice and gravel explode onto the palate. The 2020 will require a measure of patience, but it has a ton of potential." Drink 2025 - 2035

97/100 Kerin O’Keefe

“Showing great structure and balance, the radiant Rabajà entices with intense aromas of forest berry, underbrush, new leather and dark spice. It’s full-bodied and delicious, delivering succulent Morello cherry, black raspberry and layers of dark spice. Firm tannins grip the finish." Drink 2026 - 2032

95/100 Parker's Wine Advocate, Monica Larner

"In this vintage, the Rabajà was served last in a series of nine Riservas; that's because it shows the most structure and power over a very defined and sharp mouthfeel. The Produttori del Barbaresco 2020 Barbaresco Riserva Rabajà is streamlined and tight and a wine of enormous energy. The fruit is crunchy and tight with cassis and blackberry. A pretty mineral note defines Rabajà, giving it a chalky or powdery sensations on the close." Drink 2026 - 2050
