2022 Planeta Cerasuolo di Vittoria (Red Label)

92 Points John Caro
In stock
A suave and modern version of this classic Sicilian red. Cerasuolo di Vittoria has a distinguished history and remains the only Sicilian wine recognised by Italy's highest DOCG status. The name Cerasuolo describes the 'cherry-like' nature of this aromatic style, where the local Frappato grape gives the red fruit and fresh mineral acidity while the Nero D'Avola frames it with a touch of colour and structure. Like its northern neighbour Etna, Cerasuolo has lately won kudos from international connoisseurs for its Burgundy-like poise, structure and aromatic appeal. This charming entry-priced example is really beautiful value.

Its Origins

"Diego Planeta, along with Giacomo Rallo of Donnfugata and Lucio Tasca d’Almerita, is one of the three founding fathers of the “Sicilian wine renaissance” sparked 10 to 15 years ago. Cousins Francesca, Santi and Alessio Planeta hold the reigns to the estate today and have developed one of the most innovative and modern wine entities in Italy (they are among the most “liked” wineries on Facebook). The Planeta family boasts a gifted hand in marketing and their hard work has only helped to develop the “Sicily” brand within the many foreign markets they penetrate." Parker's Wine Advocate, Monica Larner

What The Critics Say

91/100 Vinous, Eric Guido

"Peppery and oral, the 2022 Cerasuolo di Vittoria wafts up with a spicy blend of crushed wild berries and savory herbs. This opens with a pretty inner sweetness and crisp red and blue fruits. Tantalizing acidity refreshes the palate toward the close. It tapers o classically dry yet fresh and oral, leaving a violet resonance to fade." Drink 2024 - 2028

91/100 Wine Enthusiast, Danielle Callegari

"The nose features aromas of cherry blossom, raspberry and blood orange, along with savory notes of pencil shavings and black tea. Cherries and raspberries macerate on the palate, but that sanguine, almost chalky bitterness of tea leaves persists before a salted chocolate finish."
