2021 Cigliuti Barbaresco Serraboella

Grape
Nebbiolo
Its Origins
The Cigliuti family have been in the business for four generations, though it was not until 1964 that Renato Cigliuit, began bottling the wine to sell under their own name, around the time as other pioneers like Giacosa. Most of the vineyard and the winery is on the Serraboella hill, looking over Neive from the east, and it is the Barbaresco Serraboella which is the flagship wine of the estate. This hill, composed of calcareous marl and tufa soils, gives classic wines which combine the textural finesse of clay and the length and longevity of wines from limestone. Of their 8 hectares, 6 are used for vines and 2 for their continuing hazelnut business. The estate is now together with his daughters Claudia and Silvia. The Cigliutis are all organic and practise "lutte raisonee", using only copper sulphate in the vineyards. Work in the cellar is kept to a bare minimum and the wines are left to follow their own natural course. No select yeasts are used, only native. Fermentation is done in stainless steel at controlled temperatures and maturation takes place in Slovenian and French large barrels and barriques. The Barbera is a particularly beautiful wine, one of the best modern style examples of this grape you can find. The Barbaresco is aged in both large old oak barrels (60%) and new barriques (40%).
What The Critics Say
97/100 Jeb Dunnuck
"Grown in calcareous chalky soils with 65-year-old vines, the 2021 Barbaresco Serraboella went through 20 days of fermentation and was aged in 80% Slavonian cask and the rest 500-liter French tonneau. A jeweled ruby/red color, it's a more serious and contemplative wine that opens in the glass with notes of cedar and leather before revealing more pure notes of raspberry liqueur, pressed flowers, and sweet herbs. The structure is noble and ripe, with a good, compact feel, more depth and broader tannins, as well as a mineral feel with a pleasing saltiness and even acidity. A lovely wine, it needs time but is going to drink well over the coming 20 or more years."
95/100 Vinous, Antonio Galloni
"Cigliuti's 2021 Barbarescos are fine follow-ups to the stellar 2020s. I find the younger wines a bit nervier than the 2020s, but both vintages are so strong. The 2021s were brought in from late September to early October, a pretty classic time frame by today's standards. As always, the wines are done with spontaneous fermentations and see 26 months in wood (relatively long for Barbaresco), 80% cask and 20% tonneau for the Serraboella. These wines are surely deserving of a broader audience. The 2021 Barbaresco Serraboella is elegant, deep and beautifully polished, its recent bottling notwithstanding. Dark-fleshed fruit, incense, new leather, licorice, mocha and a touch of small-oak sweetness all build with a bit of coaxing. Young tannins are a bit forbidding at this stage. Readers will have to be patient. There's gorgeous depth and intensity here. Drink 2025-2038"

"A beam of pure cherry and raspberry fruit signals this supple yet firmly structured red. Lithe and vibrant, with terrific balance and an aftertaste that picks up eucalyptus and spice flavors. Though approachable now, this should be even better in two to three years. Best from 2027 through 2042. —B.S."
