2022 Astrolabe Kekerengu Pinot Gris

Grape
Pinot Gris
Its Origins
Astrolabe was created in 1996 by winemaker Simon Waghorn, the culmination of a career that began in South Australia in 1982. Winemaking later led Simon and his family from Te Kauwhata to Gisborne, where he specialised in Chardonnay, and eventually to Marlborough where in 1996 he and his wife Jane Forrest-Waghorn joined with old friends Paul Davenport and Sally Lewis to have a go at their own label…and so began Astrolabe. Today they work with a number of growers scattered all over Marlborough, from Awatere valley to the Kekerengu coast to the Wairau Valley, developing a wide portfolio of iconic wines that celebrate the varieties and terroirs of Marlborough.
What The Critics Say
92/100 The Real Review, Stephen Wong MW
“Lightly toasty, clearly defined nose. The palate enters with acidity but also driving fruit weight and some sweet, dried pear flavours spiced with ginger. It finishes chewy like nashi pear. A tight, characterful style with mid-weight flavours, finishing zesty, spicy and dry for near-term enjoyment 01 Aug 2024." Drink 2024 - 2027
93/100 Cameron Douglas MS
“A sophisticated and complex wine with layers of white fleshed fruits and citrus, there’s a savoury quality and fine lees suggestion. On the palate a delicious wine with a coarse silk texture, slaine and white spices, citrus and apple, refreshing, a slaivating and new. Enticing and refreshing, textured and lengthy, a Gris with a sense of place and time, charm and presence. Best drinking from 2023 through 2026+.”
