2021 Felsina Berardenga Chianti Riserva

94 Points James Suckling

A beautiful Reserva Sangiovese from the Classico territory of Tuscany. Compelling stuff, the complexity and depth in this wine are something to behold. From the southern tip of Classico, where the wines are very akin to the highly refined Brunellos of nearby Montalcino, this packs the expressive red fruit fruits with gentle savoury and mineral power. Structured and utterly complete, it is a must for the decanter or cellar.

Its Origins

The estate vineyards straddle the Chianti Classico and Chianti Colli Senesi region, and are quite close to the town of Siena. There are 61 hectares of vines in all, but the property is much bigger, totalling 475 hectares, and including olive trees, wheat fields and forests. The name Felsina dates back to the Etruscan people, and back to 2000 BC. Many words in Italy beginning with ‘Fel’ or ‘Bol’ have Etruscan roots. The modern era of Fèlsina began in 1966 when current owner Giuseppe Mazzocolin’s father-in-law acquired the property. They began with 9 hectares of vines, but grew this by massale selection to its current size, and acquired a second property: Castello di Farnetella, in the Colli Senesi.

What The Critics Say

93/100 Vinous, Antonio Galloni

"The 2021 Chianti Classico Riserva shows the pedigree of this important vintage in its complex, multi-faceted personality. A wine of nuance and layers, the 2021 has so much to offer. Black cherry, leather, spice, tobacco, menthol, licorice and game are all amplied in this super-classic Riserva from Fèlsina." Drink 2025 - 2041

93/100 James Suckling

"A well-composed, balanced and refined riserva with aromas of cherries, dried thyme, bark and warm spices. It’s medium-bodied with fine tannins. Dense and textured on the palate, with fine structure and poise. Focused and well defined, with a long, flavorful, vivid finish. Drink or hold."

92/100 Wine Enthusiast, Danielle Callegari

"The nose is defined by the tartness of dried cherries, dried cranberries, hibiscus, blood orange and wild strawberries. Strawberries and raspberries headline a sweeter palate, but a fresh salinity provides balance, and sturdy tannins structure a hot finish."
