Chardonnay (predominant) and Pinot Noir
Established in 1985 by Cape Mentelle, Cloudy Bay Vineyards is situated in the Wairau Valley in Marlborough at the northern end of New Zealand’s South Island. This unique and cool wine region enjoys a maritime climate with the longest hours of sunshine of any place in New Zealand. Cloudy Bay has estate vineyards located at prime sites within the Wairau Valley, and long-term supply agreements with five Wairau Valley growers. The main varieties grown are sauvignon blanc, chardonnay, and pinot noir with lesser quantities of gewurztraminer, Riesling, and pinot gris.
What The Critics Say
93/100 Sam Kim
“A classic blend of Chardonnay and Pinot Noir, the primary fermentation was carried out in stainless steel tanks, large oak vats and small French oak barrels. As always, this is a beautifully framed méthode traditionnelle with complex aromas of yeast, citrus, white peach and mushroom. The palate is refined and flowing with silky texture and a lingering crisp finish. Very satisfying.”
95/100 Bob Campbell
"Rich, mouth filling Methode with plenty of bready, biscuity yeast autolysis supported by subtle citrus fruit flavours. This wine has a great texture, real power, an impeccable balance and a delicious texture. I cannot remember it being this good."
88/100 wine Advocate, Lisa Perrotti-Brown
"Scented of apple tart, peaches and orange blossoms with hints of brioche and clover honey, the NV Pelorus has good finesse in the mouth with plenty of small, persistent bubbles and a good amount of apple and stone fruit flavors before finishing with a good persistence of yeasty notes. Drink it now."
