Campbells Rutherglen Topaque

94 Points James Halliday
In stock
A exceptional sweet wine from one of the true legends in Rutherglen, Victoria. Originally called 'Tokay' due to a falsely believed lineage from Hungarian Tokaji, the grape in Victoria was later revealed as Muscadelle from Bordeaux - so in 2007 Australian producers renamed the style 'Topaque'. But the essence remains the same, for this style and the sweet Muscats - both of which have been called the 'world's richest wines'. Over-ripe or 'raisined' grapes are gently harvested and made into fortified sweet into barrels and blended in a solera system with equally sweet, fortified wines of previous vintages. Offering lavish richness, complexity, and roundness from pre-aging before release, this Topaque is hugely satisfying and exceptional value at this very ordinary price.

Its Origins

With five generations and 140 years of family winemaking, the Campbells have forged a reputation as a benchmark Rutherglen winery. Today, winemaker Colin Campbell and his brother, viticulturist Malcolm, are the custodians of the family tradition, along with their wives Prue and Jenny and their children. The jewels in their crown are the luscious Rutherglen Topaques (formerly known as Tokays) and Muscats which are considered to be amongst the world's richest wines.

What The Critics Say

94/100 Halliday's Wine companion, James Halliday

"There's an argument to say that the youngest tier of topaque is the most enjoyable, it's so immediately compelling (and dangerous). There are shortbread biscuits, spices galore and honey all to be had."

91/100 Parker's Wine Advocate, Lisa Perrotti-Brown

"Made from 100% Muscadelle, the NV Classic Rutherglen Topaque has a pale to medium amber color and aromas of dried fruit cake, figs, toffee and preserved mandarin peel with a hint of powdered cinnamon and ginger. Very sweet, rich and concentrated, it offers very crisp acidity and a long honeyed finish. Drink it now. -- The Rutherglen fortified wines are stored in seasoned 450 liter oak casks and a solera system is used to mature the wines. The age of the wines varies from 5- 25 years on average."

90/100 Vinous, Josh Raynolds

"(for 375 ml.) Deep amber with a bright rim. Spicy aromas of gingerbread, baked apple and toffee, plus a subtle floral quality and a touch of white pepper. Surprisingly lively for such a sweet wine, with good lift to its candied pit fruit and spicecake flavors. Clings nicely on the finish, leaving sweet toffee and date notes behind."
