Its Origins

Reydan and Roger Weiss first fell in love with the beauty of Te Awanga when visiting from Germany in 2001. Together they envisaged owning a state-of-the-art winery, merging the traditional values of wine making with an innovative approach and contemporary style to produce exceptional wines to savour and enjoy. With the majestic elephant as their namesake and nestled against a backdrop of rolling hillsides, Elephant Hill spans over 25 hectares of vineyards producing classical, aromatics whites and world-class reds, helmed by winemaker Steve Skinner.

What The Critics Say

93/100 Cameron Douglas MS

"Delightful, generous and fruit-laden bouquet showcasing scents of spicy white pear and baked apple, there’s a fine lees quality with a whisper of ginger then mineral. Taut, salivating and saline crisp on the palate with a core of fruit flavours that reflect the bouquet. Acidity highlights the youthful nature of the fruit with a citrus peel note before the white fleshed flavours of pear and apple return. Balanced and well made with a lengthy dry finish. Excellent drinking from 2022 through 2028." Drink 2022 - 2028

93/100 Wine Orbit, Sam Kim

The palate displays succulent fruit intensity together with supple texture and juicy acidity, making it flavoursome and deliciously appealing. At its best: now to 2025. $24.00. www.elephanthill.co.nz. June 2022." Drink 2022 - 2025

93/100 Raymond Chan Reviews, Candice Chow

"Bright, even, pale yellow. The nose is voluminous, fragrant and mealy; aromas of pear and apple interweave white blossom and spice. Medium-bodied, aromas of pear and apple intertwine stonefruit, abundant white floral and delicate spice. The fruit shows concentrations with excellent acid freshness and lends a lengthy, refreshing finish. Talcum-textured phenolics contribute elegance and mouthfeel, carrying floral fragrance. This elegant Pinot Gris possesses lush fruit, floral details, a bright acid line and a fine texture mouthfeel. Match with white fish and pork over the next 3-4 years. Fruit from Te Awanga, 90% Pinot Gris, 10% Viognier, fermented in tank to 13.5% alc, aged 4 months on fine lees with occasional stirring. 18.5/20 pts (93 pts) July 2022 RRP $24." Drink 2022 - 2026
