Pinot Gris
A mutation of Pinot Noir, Pinot Gris grapes are not white or grey but pink! Thus like Gewürztraminer, Pinot Gris makes a rich, textural and sometimes honey-yellow white. This fuller style has spread from the home of aromatic wines - Alsace in France - and seemed to gain in sweetness as it spread through much of the Old and New World, with typical New Zealand examples now being full-bodied and almost heavy with the perfume of pear, stone and tropical fruit. The Italian Pinot Grigio style by contrast plays down the grape’s fruitiness and plays up the nice, approachable acidity to create masses of easy-going and/or serious still wines perfect for aperitif and or white meats.
