2023 Usseglio Chateauneuf du Pape Blanc Pure Clairette

Its Origins
“This third-generation family domaine of Italian origins is run today by Raymond’s son, Stéphane Usseglio. The estate counts 24-hectares in Châteauneuf-du-Pape, all of which have been managed biodynamically since 2011. Their vineyards are divided equally between the galet-strewn parcels around Orange, the sandy soils of Courthézon, and the alluvial, clay soils of the Crau plateau and the village of Bédarrides. Stéphane continues to innovate, using small, new oak barrels alongside the traditional foudres, as well as experimenting with concrete and terracotta amphorae of all shapes and sizes. His ’20s are powerful, filled with structure and concentration, but also surprising freshness. Their complexity leaves you going back for more, and they are undoubtedly very age worthy." -BBR. "Readers looking for the next superstar estate in Châteauneuf du Pape and Côtes du Rhône need to get on Raymond Usseglio’s bandwagon ASAP as the quality here is equal to anything out there today." - Jeb Dunnuck.
What The Critics Say
95/100 Decanter, Matt Walls
“A fresh and lively style of Châteauneuf blanc, but still with the requisite size, shape and power. It’s well balanced, with energy and vibrancy; the well-judged oak is present but doesn't occlude the fruit. An impressive wine with presence, detail and a long finish. Grown on sand in Bois Sénéchaux, all fermented and aged in foudre and demi-muid." Drink 2024 – 2036
94/100 JamesSuckling.com, Stuart Pigott
“An elegant and creamy white Chateauneuf with very good concentration and charming lemon notes, everything from blossoms to candied fruit. The salty minerality makes the long, supple finish bright and uplifting. From biodynamically grown grapes. Fermented and matured in demi muids and Stockinger Fuder. Drink or hold."
17.5/20 JancisRobinson.com, Alistair Cooper MW
"50% Clairette Rose, 50% Clairette. Aged for 8 months, 60% in foudres and 40% in demi-muids. Certified organic and biodynamic. Tasted blind. A fine and linear palate with a sense of fresh minerality and lovely texture. Ripe but not heavy and with a saline note on the finish. Really engaging, refreshing and enticing. Superb. (AC)."
