2024 Quintodecimo 'Exultet' Fiano di Avellina

95 Points John Caro
In stock
An absolute "benchmark" of this southern Italian variety, this Fiano is a marvellous wine from Quintodecimo. From a special single cru vineyard in Lapio, this has huge depth and yet a delicate layering and focus. This particular elegance also derives from a small portion being fermented in small new oak barrels. Exultet is a sophisticated and premium interpretation of Fiano di Avellino.

Its Origins

Owner Luigi Moio was born into an historical family of winemakers in Campania dating back to 1880. After an extended stay in France studying viticulture and winemaking, Luigi returned to Italy in 1994 and in addition to teaching at the University of Naples, undertook the task of winemaker at various prestigious Italian wineries. The urge to do his own thing and make the highest quality wines possible in his beloved Campania became too strong to resist and in 2001 his dream was realised and Quintodecimo was born. The estate covers 12 hectares of vineyard, centred on the hill of Mirabella Eclano 420 metres above sea level, where they benefit from warm summers and fresh nights. "This grouping of wines from Luigi Moio boasts some of the very best expressions made in Campania today. I cannot exaggerate my admiration for these efforts made by one of Italy's most celebrated professors of viticulture and enology and his family in the Mirabella Eclano subzone of Avellino. Quintodecimo is a benchmark for Campania wines." (Monica Larner)

What The Critics Say

94/100 Parker's Wine Advocate, Monica Larner (2022 vintage)

"Professor Luigi Moio's Quintodecimo is producing what I consider to be the best wines in Campania at the moment. Located in beautiful Mirabella Eclano in the mountainous area of Irpinia, this is a very special estate that is uncompromising when it comes to achieving quality. Moio's magic touch is evident in this challenging vintage that saw very hot conditions and forced stringent fruit selection. His Quintodecimo 2022 Fiano di Avellino Exultet (with 40,000 bottles released) is one of the best Campania white wines made in this vintage. The bouquet is generous and fluid with softly ripened peach, pear, poached apple and a touch of sweet Madagascar vanilla bean. The wine ferments in both stainless steel (70%) and new oak (30%) on the fine lees. You get so much texture and depth as a result, and it has a creamy, long finish." Drink 2023-2032

95/100 Wines.Critic.com, Rafaelle Vecchione (2021 vintage)

"Fresh and vibrant in the main matrix it shows a green nature profile reminiscent of slightly ripe kiwis, sweet pears, marjoram, green apples, linden and wild thyme. The luminous background dispenses character and energy in the notes of hay and walnut husk. Full body, solid and centered on the palate, it closes harmoniously and balanced and extends showing a persuasive beauty in the sip. What a joy. Drink now or get old."

94+/100 Parker's Wine Advocate, Monica Larner (2021 vintage)

"This gorgeous wine draws its fruit from a seven-hectare vineyard near the village of Lapio. The Quintodecimo 2021 Fiano di Avellino Exultet is layered with minty apple, poached pear and wild fennel, or finocchietto in Italian. The aromas are delivered with elegant and discreet intensity, and you can count on a lasting end note of salinity or crushed mineral that gives framing and contouring to the pretty primary fruit. Thanks to careful aging on the lees, the wine offers a naked and faithful portrait of the Fiano grape. Distant powdering of crushed white pepper or licorice root appear on the extremely silky, medium-textured finish."
