2023 Riverby Marlborough Chardonnay

93 Points Sam Kim
In stock
Balanced and concentrated Chardonnay from old vines, this offers the extreme quality-for-value of this variety from Marlborough. Along with the expert winemaking of these old regional players, this label is sourced in Riverby's 29 year old ungrafted Mendoza vines. Yes, ungrafted! With creamy and oak textures balanced by the Mendoza clone's deep citrus — and the Marlborough region's vibrant freshness — this is a serious wine for a very, very nice price.

Its Origins

A major factor in Riverby’s success is the total control over all grape production on the single estate vineyard. A significant portion of the vineyard consists of vines with considerable age and this is complemented by slightly younger vines utilising modern clones. This combination of vine age and meticulous clonal selection is readily apparent in the high quality fruit being produced. Vines were first planted in 1989; on land that had previously been used for cropping and sheep farming. Further plantings have continued over the years, until now over 70 hectares are planted out in Sauvignon Blanc, Chardonnay, Pinot Noir, Riesling, Pinot Gris, Semillon, and Syrah. The most recent planting is of Gruner Veltliner. As part of Riverby’s focus on viticultural excellence, yields are kept very low and several varieties are hand picked. Sustainable grape-growing techniques are practiced throughout the whole grape-growing and winemaking cycle.

What The Critics Say

93/100 Sam Kim, Wine Orbit

"Delightfully ripe and elegantly complex, showing apricot, rockmelon, vanilla, and hazelnut aromas, followed by a beautifully flowing palate that's succulent and creamy. Well supported by juicy acidity, finishing smooth and rounded with delectable flavours. At its best: now to 2030."

4 Stars M.Cooper

"The 2023 vintage (****), estate-grown at Rapaura, was harvested from mature vines, planted in 1989. Bright, light lemon/green, it is an attractive, mouth-filling, well-rounded wine, with strong stone-fruit flavours, mealy and biscuity notes adding complexity, and a slightly creamy texture. Best drinking mid-2026+."
