Connoisseurs cellar this wine, but here the winery have done it for you! This is a great opportunity to taste a famous New Zealand Riesling at ten years of age. The standard Peg Bay Riesling is a classic of North Canterbury, with bright citrus and tree fruit in a richly textured and mineral style. This special release has softened with age although the characters remain wonderfully bright and expressive. Recently reviewed, this outstanding wine is drinking beautifully now but still has a big future ahead of it. Grab this before it goes!

Riesling

Its Origins

Located in arguably New Zealand's most exciting wine region of North Canterbury (more specifically, Waipara), albeit sparsely scattered with wine estates it is at the forefront of interesting and unique wines in NZ. This is due in part to a fabulous free-draining, well protected terroir. Pegasus Bay is run by the Donaldson family who were pioneers in the region and have been involved with local grape growing and winemaking since the 1970's. The whole family are involved in the process from grape to bottle, and a deep respect for the land, with a long term view towards vine and soil health typifies the Donaldson Family's approach to grape growing. Pegasus Bay is an accredited member of the NZWG sustainable viticulture program and are firm believers of using natural methods to combat pests and diseases rather than the application of unnecessary pesticides and herbicides.

What The Critics Say

96/100 James Suckling

"The extended age shows dried apples, pears and white flowers. Full-bodied with loads of fruit and phenolics that frame it nicely and give it length and polish. A waxy, lemon curd sense to this. Long, flavorful and very, very textured. Drink or hold. Screw cap." (Tasted in late 2024)

96/100 Wine Orbit, Sam Kim

"Wonderfully complex and enticing, the bouquet shows orange peel, honey, apricot, lemon sorbet, and subtle spice aromas. The palate delivers juicy fruit intensity with creamy texture and enticing sweetness, wonderfully countered by bright acidity, making it flavoursome and hugely appealing."

95/100 Raymond Chan Reviews, Candice Chow

"Bright, even, straw yellow with a green hue and depth. The nose is lifted, with aromas of green apple, dried apple slice, lime, petrol, crushed rocks and zest. Medium-full bodied, off-dry to taste, aromas of lime, lime peels entwined with baked apple, kumquat, honey, ginger, crushed rocks and a touch of petroleum. The wine is well-integrated and harmonious, with complex aromas developed, accompanied by soft yet enticing acidity, carrying long length and a moreish closing. A juicy Riesling with well-balanced strength and complex development. Match with chorizo pasta and chicken liver & white wine over the next 3-5 years. The fruit was harvested late in the season with a portion of botrytis, free run juice was cool fermented to 12.5% alc, 25 g/l RS." (Tasted in 2025) Drink 2025 - 2030
