2021 Edmeades Mendocino Zinfandel

92 Points John Caro
In stock
A rich but sophisticated Zinfandel from Mendocino made by a specialist in this Californian grape. Mendocino is increasingly identified with warmer-climate red grapes, where Zinfandel specialists Edmeades enjoy some of the sub-region's oldest and most elevated sites (the highest at almost 900 metres). Here grapes sit above the cooling fog of the nearby Pacific and ripen slowly into deep body and flavour. With expert yet hands-off winemaking, this classy style offers that massive zinfandel body and depth, but with serious finesse. Delicious!

Its Origins

The winery’s history began in 1963 when Dr. Donald Edmeades, founded his winery and launched the Edmeades brand in 1972. The Jackson family purchased the winery and its vineyards in 1988. Using grapes grown in Mendocino County’s rugged coastal mountains, Edmeades crafts Zinfandels with distinctive character and personality. The simplicity of the winemaking allows the soil and climate of each site, plus the essential character of the variety, to shine through in every wine. Ben Salazar joined Edmeades as head winemaker in 2012 after working as an enologist and assistant winemaker for other Jackson Family wineries. He is a Zinfandel devotee who appreciates the grape’s historical importance to California. Edmeades is best known for its limited-edition, single-vineyard Zinfandels from some of the oldest and highest sites in Mendocino County, including Perli (planted in the late 1800s), Piffero (planted in 1930 using blasting powder to clear the side of a mountain), Shamrock (2,800 feet above the Pacific Ocean), and Gianoli (planted at 1,900 feet in the 1880s).

What The Critics Say

Winemaker notes on current 2021 vintage

"The Mendocino County Zinfandel begins with concentrated aromas of baking spices including; cinnamon and cloves. Those spices give way to aromas of blackberries, black currants, and dried sage. The texture is round, and the fruit expression is focused and lush. Subtle and integrated tannins accentuate the richness of the wine, while pleasant acidity keeps it fresh on the finish. Pair with char-broiled burgers, barbeque chicken or eggplant parmesan."

91/100 Wine Enthusiast

"This deep, rich expression of Zinfandel, delivers notes of overripe blueberry and blackberry, blackplum jam, Mission figs, black-cherry compote, chocolate, vanilla, black pepper and a hint toasted wood. The voluptuousness of the fruit is well-met by the coarse, mouthcoating tannins and balanced by a solid acid structure. *Best Buy*

17/20 and Very Good Value, Jancis Robinson (2019 vintage)

"Dark garnet. Nose of heady, herbal old California (but not jammy) fruit. Lifted with soft tannins and lots of sweet but not sickly fruit. Dry (not drying), appetising finish. Not overworked. You feel this is a vineyard-dictated wine. Tasting it, I almost feel I'm in California. Lots of guts here. Bravo! Full bottle just 1,222 g. Well done! 'It all started in 1963 when Dr Donald Edmeades, a cardiologist from Pasadena, planted 24 acres of vines, becoming the first modern-day grape grower in this cool, coastal region. He founded his winery and launched the Edmeades brand in 1972. The Jackson family purchased the winery and its vineyards in 1988.' Arguably an outlyer in the Jackson family of wines from international grapes. Good that way back they saw the value in this most California of wine styles. Contains 15% Petite Sirah. Aged for 19 months in 56% French oak and 44% American oak. GV"
