2022 Big Sky Te Muna Martinborough Pinot Noir

A one off monster special on this boutique Martinborough Pinot of superb quality. The Big Sky is our favourite Martinborough Pinot Noir. It is made by a husband-and-wife team whose Te Muna vineyard of 30 year-old vines (next to Craggy Range's vineyard) delivers quality into this bottle, and also supplies another top Martinborough label. Low vigour, low cropping, hand-picked fruit crushed into open fermenters and hand plunged, with a judicious use of new oak in aging. This shows off the delicious Te Muna fruit characters of ripe berryfruit and plums set against mouth-filling savoury spice and silky tannins. Real Martinborough Pinot at this price is a rare commodity. Drink or cellar.

Its Origins

Big Sky Wines is the Te Muna Road Martinborough wine venture of Katherine Jacobs and Jeremy Corban who returned to New Zealand from France in 2005 to make world class, hand-crafted wines that express their origins. Katherine studied and worked in viticulture and winemaking in New Zealand and France, doing vintages in Bordeaux. Jeremy is a fourth generation winemaker, a scion of the famous Corban family. Katherine and Jeremy are part of the fabric of the Te Muna Road district, with well-known neighbours Craggy Range, The Escarpment Vineyard, Te Hera and Julicher Estate around them. Katherine and Jeremy took over a site established by Ian Campbell, with 1.8 ha of Sauvignon Blanc and clone 10/5 Pinot Noir planted in 1989, and 4.2 ha of clone 115 Pinot Noir planted in 1999. They have revitalised the vineyard and personally tend the vineyard. The first crops were sold as contract fruit, but from 2013, their own label ‘Big Sky’ became the main focus, taking 80% of the yield, a reversal of the past.

What The Critics Say

95/100 Wine Orbit, Sam Kim (2020 vintage)

"Offering stunning fruit purity with seductive complexity, showing dark cherry, blueberry, violet, clove and roasted hazelnut characters on the nose with a hint of warm mushroom. The concentrated palate displays excellent weight and depth, while remaining elegant and refined with velvety mouthfeel and polished tannins. At its best: now to 2030. $45.00. www.bigskywines.co.nz. Sept 2021."

18.5/20 Joelle Thomson (previous vintage)

"Winemakers Jeremy Corban and Katherine Jacobs are situated at the end of Te Muna Valley, nine kilometers east of Martinborough village, and they make small volumes of exceptionally good quality Pinot Noir. Earthy aromas and bold dark fruit flavours characterise their beautifully balanced , medium- bodied, dry and refreshing Pinot Noirs. This is a great wine from a fab vintage in a vastly underrated wine region."
