2022 Tempier Bandol 'Lulu & Lucien' Classique

Grape
Mourvedre with Grenache, Cinsault, Carignan and Syrah
Its Origins
"Easily the most widely recognized estate in Bandol, Domaine Tempier has been run by the Peyraud family since 1936. (Though the Domaine has existed since the reign of Louis XV). Today, with the passing of Lucien Peyraud in 1996 and the retirement of sons Francois and Jean-Marie, the estate is run by the tall, energetic and talented Daniel Ravier—who speaks with a refreshing honesty and humility. Looking at the reds, the estate fashions four cuvees, a classic Bandol from a mix of terroirs, and three single vineyards—La Migoua, La Tourtine and Cabassaou. Lying outside the village of Le Beausset, the La Migoua vineyard is the highest elevation site of the three and sits at 270 meters above sea level; it consists of diverse clay and limestone soils. Possessing the smallest amount of Mourvèdre (~55%) and the most Grenache, this cuvee is always slightly less powerful and rich than the other two single vineyards, yet is always the most perfumed and complex. The La Tourtine parcel lies at a slightly lower elevation, in the Castellet region, and is more homogeneously clay soils. This parcel yields a powerful, rich, concentrated and surprisingly polished Bandol that has the fruit and texture to impress in its youth, yet the concentration to age beautifully." What The Critics Say
91-93/100 RobertParker.com, Joe Czerwinsky (2021 vintage)
"Tasted from foudre, the 2020 Bandol Cuvee Classique had been blended the week before my visit. Already showing classic notes of tree bark and truffle layered against cherries and raspberries and a touch of olive, it looks relatively precocious. In the mouth, it's medium to full-bodied, concentrated and rich, with a long, plush finish." Drink 2023 - 2035
92/100 Decanter (2021 vintage)
"Big, soft supple black damson fruit. Fresh, vibrant acidity with some dry oak, and supple wild black damsons, a hint of blackberries. Tart, smoky layers of green dry herbs. Well-managed tannin and good grip on the finish."
95/100 Steven Spurrier’s 2018 Most Memorable Wines of All Time masterclass (2011 Vintage)
"At nearly eight years' old, this is just entering its drinking window. It remains fresh and youthful with deep, unyielding colour and a nose redolent of Provencal herbs and garrigue. It's elegantly fruited with ample damson, cherry and bramble, and there are also mid-palate notes of tar, thyme, bay leaf and black olive. The tannins are sleek, ripe and well ordered, beautifully buttressed by refreshing acidity. The ensemble is very complete, rich and balanced, showing a real sense of place."
