2022 Quintodecimo 'Terra D'Eclano' Irpinia Aglianico

95 Points John Caro

"The Barolo of the South". Immensely satisfying and full-flavoured, this is one of the worlds finest examples of Aglianco. This label is sourced from five of the family's vineyards with different soil profiles, giving it a roundness and completeness that offers special appeal in the early drinking. But the deep structure of Aglianico, also gives Terre d’Eclano an extraordinary ability for long ageing. Packed with rich fruit depth and mineral layering, this is a compelling expression of southern Italy's most noble red wine variety. This is a must try!

Its Origins

Owner Luigi Moio was born into an historical family of winemakers in Campania dating back to 1880. After an extended stay in France studying viticulture and winemaking, Luigi returned to Italy in 1994 and in addition to teaching at the University of Naples, undertook the task of winemaker at various prestigious Italian wineries. The urge to do his own thing and make the highest quality wines possible in his beloved Campania became too strong to resist and in 2001 his dream was realised and Quintodecimo was born. The estate covers 12 hectares of vineyard, centred on the hill of Mirabella Eclano 420 metres above sea level, where they benefit from warm summers and fresh nights. "This grouping of wines from Luigi Moio boasts some of the very best expressions made in Campania today. I cannot exaggerate my admiration for these efforts made by one of Italy's most celebrated professors of viticulture and enology and his family in the Mirabella Eclano subzone of Avellino. Quintodecimo is a benchmark for Campania wines." (Monica Larner)

What The Critics Say

97/100 James Suckling (2014 vintage)

"What an incredible nose of iodine, ink, explosive violets, crushed stones, stems, brambles, blackberries, oyster shell and cedar. Full body, incredibly grainy and dusty tannins, vibrant acidity and a fruit-forward but wonderfully minerally finish. So seamless yet dense at the same time. Refined and juicy. Need I say more? Delicious now but better later."

95/100 WinesCritic.com, Raffaele Vecchione (2017 vintage)

"The wisdom in the glass manifests itself in a pure celebration of beauty, with a blend of floral and fruity aromas that reveal a masterful extraction and the wisdom of taming the grape variety. The sensory orchestra opens with the tart sweetness of raspberries and currants, then slowly transitions to larger berries reminiscent of blackberries and blue plums. The irrepressible undercurrent of sweet power reveals itself with floral notes of lavender and violet, with a subtle touch of wild myrtle. Medium-full body, soft tannins, and a firm structure blend into a luminous and balanced finish, a pure expression of the varietal. A pure Aglianico."

93/100 Vinous, Eric Guido (2021 vintage)

"The 2021 Terra D'Eclano is remarkably expressive, with a vivid blend of wild strawberries, violets, lavender and hints of wet stone. It sweeps across the palate, wildly fresh and lifted with crisp wild berry fruits and perfumed inner florals. Tactile mineral tones form toward the close. The 2021 finishes long and staining yet energetic, with a gentle tug of fine tannins and a nuance of sour citrus. Wow."
