2020 Fucci Aglianico del Vulture Titolo

95 Points Antonio Galloni's Vinous

Aglianico from Mount Vulture in Southern Italy is called the 'Barolo of the South', because it is such a lush-fruited but also complex and minerally red. This ancient style is presented in a boutique example by the increasingly legendary Elena Fucci, a younger generation producer who specialises in only this wine. It comes from old vines planted high on Mount Vulture in special volcanic ash soils, which provides the slow-ripened fruit with deep nuances of sulfuric, savoury character. Layered but fresh, this has serious appeal now and for the future.

Its Origins

"This year, I had the great pleasure of tasting a complete vertical of Elena Fucci’s Aglianico del Vulture Titolo, from 2000 to 2012. Her inaugural vintage was 2000 and 2012 is her current release. She makes but one wine and this is it. Because all her effort goes into that single product with the same consistency and approach, year after year, Titolo is the perfect benchmark wine for Aglianico ageability. The winemaking process has remained the same: Titolo ages in new and used 225-liter French oak for 12 months and rests in bottle for an additional year before release. Only one-third of that oak is new. Her production has soared from 5,950 bottles in 2000 to 19,800 bottles in 2012. Titolo is the name of the area in the township of Barile where her six hectares of vineyards are located. Sixty- and 70-year-old vines are planted 600 meters above sea level, benefitting from excellent diurnal temperature shifts on volcanic soils. She opts for extremely low yields and usually picks the late-harvest Aglianico grape at the end of October or beginning of November for optimal tannin ripeness. I cannot exaggerate how impressed I am by her wines. Each one is a masterpiece in its own right and no wine scored below 90 points. In fact, my greatest delight came in tasting the so-called weaker vintages like 2002, 2003 and 2006 that were all inspiring in their own ways." Parker's Wine Advocate, Monica Larner

What The Critics Say

95/100 Vinous, Eric Guido

"It’s almost impossible to pull away from the darkly alluring and utterly radiant aromatics of the 2020 Aglianico del Vulture Titolo. With each swirl, tobacco, ash and forest floor give way to crushed violets, black currants and mint candies. It washes across the palate like pure silk, at first pliant and soothing, yet quickly gains a more tactile crunch, as mineral-tinged fruits saturate, and savory herbal tones resonate throughout. The 2020 finishes structured and incredibly long with notes of salted licorice, balsamic spice and cocoa that never seem to quit; and yet, through it all, residual acids keep the mouthwatering. This is deceptively attractive at this young stage, yet structured for the long haul—what a beauty." Drink 2025 - 2038

94/100 WinesCritic.com, Raffaelle Vecchione

"Slender and dynamic in the main profile, it alternates notes of lemon flowers, linden, wild thyme, oregano, juniper berries and nutmeg. Lots of black cherries and wild strawberries describe the secondary scene. Full body, well polymerized tannins and a very persistent finish. Splendid expression made in Vulture. Better from 2025."
