2023 Wirra Wirra Catapult Shiraz

Grape
Shiraz/Syrah
Its Origins
Wirra Wirra Vineyards was established in 1894 by South Australian eccentric and cricketer Robert Strangways Wigley. The winery prospered in its early days, producing many wines including a much acclaimed shiraz, which was exported to England and the Empire until his death in 1926. The winery ran into disrepair and was eventually abandoned. In 1969 under the watchful eye of the late Greg Trott and his first-cousin Roger, the winery was rebuilt from the remnants of two walls and a few slate fermenting tanks. Church Block was the first wine the late Greg Trott produced under the Wirra Wirra label back in 1972. He took the name from one of the original vineyards, which runs next to the small Bethany Church (est. 1854) across the road from Wirra Wirra's century old ironstone cellars
What The Critics Say
93/100 JamesSuckling.com, Ned Goodwin MW
"A generous, full-bodied shiraz. Defined by exuberant aromas of lilacs, iodine and purple fruit set in relief against a deftly hewn tannic structure with hints of licorice and a ripple of maritime freshness. Pepper and clove notes grow in intensity as the tannins compress and release flavor in incremental bursts. A warmer climatic expression with a complex, cool aura. From organically grown grapes. Drink or hold. Screw cap."
91/100 The Real Review, Stuart Knox
"Rich ruby with a full purple tint at the rim. Mulberry and mocha aromatics. Dense and powerful but doesn’t overbear the palate. Ripe blue fruits, dusty earth and mocha notes are all in harmony. Tannins are quite gravelly, ensuring there’s a contrasting tension to the fruit's generosity. Flows long and finishes with a bone-dry crunch. A lot of bang for buck and will offer cellaring rewards 15 Oct 2025." Drink 2025 - 2035
96/100 and Gold Medal at Decanter World Wine Awards (2019 vintage)
"Bright and aromatic, with a gentle, oak-derived caramel underlay running beneath pepper, floral black fruits and salty red berries. Smart, persistent and finishing with lifted mint."
