94 Points Andrew Caillard MW
In stock
Wow! An MW just gave this stunning red a place among the 12 best wines of the Gimblett Gravels in 2023! It is usually the region's expensive wines that achieve this coveted place in the Annual Selection by Andrew Caillard MW. But this Chatterer label is always exceptional for the price, and that quality was boosted further in 2023 when Squawking Magpie released all their best fruit from the Gravels under this great-value label! Merlot loves Hawkes Bay, and on the Gimblett Gravels it produces a rich and succulent wine with real depth and fine, ripe tannins. A classic style that is so satisfying in the glass, this winning red is amazing value. Stocks will fly!

Its Origins

Squawking Magpie Owner and Director Gavin Yortt planted the main Woodland’s vineyard in 1995, with further holdings in 2002 extending the focus on Hawkes Bay classic grapes such as Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot and Syrah. They are members of Sustainable Winegrowing New Zealand and maintain a strong focus on cellaring wines and a quality-driven (rather than brand-driven) market strategy, which begins with rigorous vineyard management. Though not shouting from every shelf, on quality-for-value Squawking Magpie wines are often among the best Hawkes Bay has to offer.

What The Critics Say

94+/100 and Gimblett Gravels Annual Vintage Selection, Andrew Caillard MW

"Medium deep crimson. Red cherry, red plum, cassis aromas with marzipan, roasted walnut notes. Supple and well concentarted with ample red and dark berry fruits, attractive mid-palate volume and sinuous grainy/ cedar tannins. Builds up claret firm with black olive, dark chocolate notes."
