Its Origins
Mills Reef Winery was established in 1989 by the Preston family. Through commitment and dedication to excellence, the Mills Reef brand has established itself as one of New Zealand's premium labels with a particular reputation for outstanding Bordeaux varietal reds and Syrah. Now called Leveret, he winery is located on 20 acres of beautifully landscaped grounds in a semi-rural setting, just 5 minutes drive from Tauranga's CBD. The vineyards are located in the Hawke’s Bay area, and two of the flagship vineyards, the Mere Road Vineyard and the Mills Reef Trust Vineyard are located right in the heart of the world-renowned Gimblett Gravels. The Mere Road is a 16 hectare block painstakingly managed for low yields to produce the very best grapes for the multi-award winning ‘Elspeth’ and ‘Reserve’ wines.
What The Critics Say
94/100 Cameron Douglas MS
"Varietal, intense, ripe, youthful and very inviting bouquet of dark plums and baked raspberry flesh, scents of clove and wood smoke, baked meats, red licorice and flat mushrooms frame the bouquet with precision and style. A dry wine touches the palate with contrasting red and blue fruit flavours from plums to raspberry and moments of jam and baking spices. Firm tannins and acidity frame the palate well with core flavours from the bouquet and a stony mineral quality. Complex and youthful, lengthy and well made. A food wine with many matching attributes. Best drinking from 2025 through 2035+."
94/100 Bob Campbell MW
"Fine-grained red in a ""fruit-bomb"" style with dark chocolate/mocha, cassis, violets, vanilla, and cherry/berry flavours. Ripe, rich wine from a successful vintage that promises long-living reds. 08 Feb 2024." Drink 2024 - 2033
