Its Origins
Mills Reef Winery was established in 1989 by the Preston family. Through commitment and dedication to excellence, the Mills Reef brand has established itself as one of New Zealand's premium labels with a particular reputation for outstanding Bordeaux varietal reds and Syrah. Now called Leveret, he winery is located on 20 acres of beautifully landscaped grounds in a semi-rural setting, just 5 minutes drive from Tauranga's CBD. The vineyards are located in the Hawke’s Bay area, and two of the flagship vineyards, the Mere Road Vineyard and the Mills Reef Trust Vineyard are located right in the heart of the world-renowned Gimblett Gravels. The Mere Road is a 16 hectare block painstakingly managed for low yields to produce the very best grapes for the multi-award winning ‘Elspeth’ and ‘Reserve’ wines.
What The Critics Say
95/100 Bob Campbell MW
"Rich, weighty red with blackcurrant, cedar, black olive, dark chocolate, mocha, cassis, and bottle development characters including forest floor and earth. Ripe wine that is drinking well now but has further development potential 08 Feb 2024." Drink 2024 - 2029
94/100 Cameron Douglas MS
"The 2020 vintage delivered many delicious wines including this Cabernet from the Mills Reef Winery - its aromas include black cherry and black berry, there’s dark roasted plum and notes of baking spices from clove to licorice and vanilla then scents of sweet toasty barrel and violets. Dry, textured and youthful on the palate with a core of dark fruit flavours that reflect the bouquet, firm ripe tannins and plenty of acidity for power, longevity and to carry the myriad flavours. Well made, dry and ready to drink. It is also a wine that can develop some more if cellared. Ideal drinking from late 2023 through 2029."
