2021 Mt Difficulty Ghost Town Chardonnay

95 Points James Suckling

A nice deal on this serious Chardonnay from Central Otago. Grown in the subregion of Lowburn, the Ghost Town is a complex white of broad stone fruit flavours with details of minerals and toasty oak. A fine example of the regional style, the Ghost Town is well worth a try!

Its Origins

It all began in the early 1990's, when the owners of five newly-planted vineyards in Bannockburn shook hands and decided to work together to produce wine under one label, Mt Difficulty. As a result, Mt Difficulty now owns some of the oldest vineyards in the Bannockburn sub-region of Central Otago in New Zealand's rugged South Island. The Mt Difficulty brand started in 1998 with a very small production of Pinot Noir and Chardonnay, made by Grant Taylor of Gibbston Valley Wines (now of Valli Wines). Prior to this the gang sold their grapes to either Gibbston Valley or Chard Farm. The Air New Zealand wine awards in 1999 put Mt Difficulty on the map, with the 1998 Pinot Noir winning a gold medal and the Chardonnay, silver.

What The Critics Say

95/100 James Suckling

"Sliced lemon tart with pie crust and light gunpowder character. Medium- to full-bodied. Hemmed-in palate. Tangy and focused with a phenolic structure that frames the fruit beautifully. A complex and serious chardonnay. Drinkable now but even better in a few years. Screw cap."

92/100 Bob Campbell MW

"Tangy, refreshing chardonnay with juicy acidity and flavours suggesting saline/oyster shell, lime blossom, chalk and ginger. Mouth-puckering wine with a pleasingly lengthy finish 23 Aug 2023." Drink 2023 - 2028
