2022 Bordeaux En Primeur

This year’s Bordeaux En Primeur campaign has started, and we have the first offers for you on the 2022 wines. All indications are that this is an exceptionally good vintage. At the top end, perhaps one of the greatest of the modern era. A number of properties may have made the best wine in their history, with long term aging potential. We didn't see this many high scores even in the famed trilogy of 2018-2020.

"The 2022s are some of the most memorable young wines I have ever tasted in Bordeaux! The best 2022s are magnificent, viscerally thrilling wines that show what is possible with thoughtful approaches to viticulture and winemaking. Given the warm, dry conditions, I expected to find rich, opulent wines in the style of other warm years, like 2009 or 2018. Far from it. The best 2022s combine flavor intensity, energy and finesse in a way that I can only describe as magical. I use that word because no one has a concrete explanation of why the wines turned out the way they did. With some exceptions, the 2022s are generally not big, imposing wines, but instead deliver notable depth and freshness without excess weight." - Vinous, Antonio Galloni

"This is the 40th year I have tasted barrel samples in Bordeaux, but I have never come across anything like the 2022 vintage. It was one of the hottest and driest growing seasons in the history of France’s most famous wine region, yet it produced thousands of opulent and structured but still fresh and balanced wines. For me personally, it sets a new benchmark for Bordeaux after my first reference vintage for the region from barrel,1982" - James Suckling

Given the extreme conditions, for many estates this was unusually both one of the earliest harvests ever, and the longest! Yields in most cases being dramatically lower than average. All this combined with the best knowledge, technology, modern viticultural and winemaking choices, has come together in a perfect combination. The quality is not universal this year though, mistakes were punished and led to out of balance wines. But the great Chateaux with the finest terroir have excelled themselves across both Left and Right Banks. So we are making some careful selections for you this year from la crème de la crème, those with the best reviews and a demonstrated track record of excellence.

Note: For those buying En Primeur for the first time, these wines are still aging in barrel and will not land until mid-2025.

Unlike other retailers (who charge a second payment on arrival), our En Primeur prices are the total and final landed cost, including GST.

With the changing economic situation and foreign exchange risk, we do this to ensure you have complete certainty over what you will pay.
