Lustau Red Vermouth
Its Origins
Bodegas Lustau was founded in 1896 by Mr. José Ruiz-Berdejo. It was a modest beginning: José, a court clerk, cultivated the vines on his land, known as Nuestra Señora de la Esperanza. In the house at the vineyard, he produced the wines he later sold to the major exporting wineries. Each individual component of this blend (Oloroso and Pedro Ximénez) is aged in its own Solera. After blending, the wine is further aged for three years in a solera of 33 American oak casks before bottling. A dark mahogany colour with bronze hues. Concentrated aromas of ripe fruits, mocca, cocoa and toffee. Very complex on the palate, with a clean acidity and flavour of raisins, nuts, crystallized orange and candied peel. Ideal with rich cakes, egg based puddings and blue cheeses (Stilton, Gorgonzola). Also as an ideal digestif for the sweet-toothed.
What The Critics Say
92 Wine Enthusiast
"An interesting newcomer to the U.S. market, the base of this vermouth is rich, nutty Sherry—80% amontillado and 20% Pedro Ximenez, to be precise. It has a coffee-brown hue and a bright dried-herb scent. The palate wows with sticky toffee, dried apricot, orange peel and cocoa. Ideal for adding complexity to drinks featuring dark spirits."
