Its Origins
When Neil and Maria Emspon arrived in Italy in 1970 they were struck by the stellar quality of local wines, compared to the cheap bulk wines then exported to the world. A life of selecting and exporting, primarily to America, top Italian wines made them strong connections across the country. In 2007 they were joined in southern Puglia by Daughter Tara (their first syllables all together making Ma-Ta-Ne) in a venture with expert locals Filippo Baccalaro and Valentino Sciotti. With a view to the massive export channels open to them, Matane wines invested their huge resources in sourcing and producing extremely high-quality yet accessible and inexpensive wines reflective of this gorgeous Meditteranean terroir.
