An elegant Sauvignon Blanc from a boutique producer. This finer example of the classic style is beautifully refreshing with aromatics that are expressive, but never overpowering. Riverby is a neighbour of Cloudy Bay and produces wines that are consistently under-priced and high in quality. Don't be deceived by the price tag, this is good stuff!

Sauvignon Blanc

Its Origins

A major factor in Riverby’s success is the total control over all grape production on the single estate vineyard. A significant portion of the vineyard consists of vines with considerable age and this is complemented by slightly younger vines utilising modern clones. This combination of vine age and meticulous clonal selection is readily apparent in the high quality fruit being produced. Vines were first planted in 1989; on land that had previously been used for cropping and sheep farming. Further plantings have continued over the years, until now over 70 hectares are planted out in Sauvignon Blanc, Chardonnay, Pinot Noir, Riesling, Pinot Gris, Semillon, and Syrah. The most recent planting is of Gruner Veltliner. As part of Riverby’s focus on viticultural excellence, yields are kept very low and several varieties are hand picked. Sustainable grape-growing techniques are practiced throughout the whole grape-growing and winemaking cycle.

What The Critics Say

94/100 Wine Orbit, Sam Kim

"It's brilliantly aromatic on the nose, showing green rockmelon, kiwifruit, lime peel and white floral aromas, followed by a wonderfully flavoursome palate offering terrific fruit power and drive. Upfront and gorgeously drinking. At its best: now to 2027. $22.00. www.riverbyestate.com. Oct 2023."

92/100 Wine Pages, Tom Cannavan

"Sited on the famous Jacksons Road in Marlborough alongside neighbours like Cloudy Bay and Allan Scott, Riverby is a different beast: a family-owned and operated vineyard with total control of its own grape production. This Sauvignon comes from an excellent vintage and immediately impresses with its intensity: the nose is a pungent explosion of guava and mango, with elderflower streaking through the aromatic exoticism. In the mouth that tropical fruit juiciness opens the show, but almost instantly a phalanx of lime acidity drives a wedge through the centre, propelling the wine to a lip-smacking, dry finish. There's more than enough fruity extract to coat the palate and withstand the onslaught of the wines freshness so there is no fruit/acid imbalance. A concentrated, decisive example of Marlborough Sauvignon at its best."
