2024 Odyssey Hera Chardonnay

A great price for Odyssey's top chardonnay. This is the top selection from the organic vineyards of Gisborne Chardonnay expert, Rebecca Salmond. This new premium-level cuvee was sourced from old, low-yielding vines of dry-farmed Mendoza Chardonnay. It's a recipe for deep and complex flavour enhanced by fermentation in only the most tight-grained French oak. The result is a wine of immense power and texture for the cellar, but also sublime pleasure for earlier drinking.

Its Origins

Odyssey Wines is owned by Rebecca Salmond. Rebecca's voyage into winemaking began at Massey University in New Zealand and Adelaide University's Roseworthy College in Australia, where she graduated with a degree in Biotechnology and a Post Graduate Diploma in Winemaking Science. She then travelled and worked in some of the world's finest wine and culinary regions: Burgundy, Bordeaux and Cote Rotie in France; Alto Adige and Sicily in Italy; Marlborough and Hawkes Bay in New Zealand. Rebecca launched her label Odyssey in 1994, with small amounts of premium wines. Odyssey now has 25 acres of land in Marlborough's Brancott Valley under vine. Rebecca's well-honed philosophy sees her making only subtle adjustments to the wine, and using where appropriate the finest oaks. All wines are single vineyard. Odyssey Wines has garnered a number of accolades and awards.

What The Critics Say

95/100 and "Outstanding" Cameron Douglas MS (2022 vintage)

"Fabulous and enticing bouquet with a rich core of spice and roasted stone fruits, layers of wood, smoke and orchard fruits. On the palate, a fuller-bodied wine with impacts from fruit then oak, alcohol then acidity. Synergies from these attributes begin to show as the wine opens out in glass. Peach and roasted apple, vanilla and freshly roasted cashew, Brazil nut and clove, and a touch of burnt butter. A delicious wine with power and intensity, mouthfeel and length. Best drinking from 2024 through 2029."

5 Stars Michael Cooper (2022 vintage)

"Gisborne Chardonnay at its finest, this powerful ,distinctive wine was grown in the Golden Triangle, hand harvested, fermented with indigenous yeasts and matured in French oak casks. Pale straw, it is fleshy and very savoury, with lush stone fruits and spice flavours, toasty notes adding complexity, balanced acidity , and a very harmonious finish. Already delicious, its a drink now or cellaring proposition."
