2024 Neudorf Tiritiri Chardonnay

93 Points Cameron Douglas MS
In stock
A classy new Chardonnay by Neudorf. Neudorf's Chardonnay expertise is on display as usual with the only difference being that this inexpensive label is sourced vineyards around this esteemed region. Of the 100% fermented in barrel, only 13% was in new oak. With its weight balanced toward minerally citrus flavours, the Tiritiri is a delight with fish and white meats.

Its Origins

Nelson is the sunniest viticultural region in New Zealand. Relatively isolated, it has never developed into large scale production but several wineries have established an excellent reputation for quality. Prime amongst these is Neudorf, created by pioneers Tim & Judy Finn back in the late 1970s. The winery buildings have developed steadily since 1980, and so has the reputation of this excellent producer specialising predominantly in chardonnay and pinot noir. Their flagship wines are designated by the subregion of Moutere. The Neudorf estate, lying on a mix of glacial outwash clay, now represents 12ha, though buys in fruit from a further 30ha (of managed vineyards). The viticulture is sustainable "lutte raisonnée" with organic practices being introduced since 2008. The wines are all made with minimal intervention; hand harvesting, wild yeast, low S02 and soft, supporting oak.

What The Critics Say

93/100 and rated "Excellent" by Cameron Douglas MS

"Delicious, bright, fresh, fruity and ready to drink from 2025 through 2030. Aromas and flavours of yellow stone fruits and citrus peel, red apple and pineapple suggestions. Crisp, weighty, satin textured and dry. Some fine fruit and wood tannins and a backbone of acidity ensure this wines instant appeal from textures through fruit and Chardonnay appeal. Well made and ready."

16.5 and rated "Very Good Value" by Jancis Robinson MW

"Light, crisp and fresh on the nose. Delightfully pure, well-balanced fruit on the palate – so clean and fresh! Hint of salinity. Impressively long finish for the price. Full screwcapped bottle just 1,167 g. Fruit – I assume much of it bought in – partially hand-picked between 14 and 23 March from clones Mendoza, 15, 95, 8021 and 548. Partial spontaneous fermentation in barrel (10% new). Aged for 10 months on full lees followed by 2 months on fine lees. pH 3.37, TA 5.7 g/l. VGV (JR)." Drink 2025 - 2028

93/100 Bob Campbell MW (2023 vintage)

"Taut, vibrant chardonnay with pronounced oyster shell/saline, hazelnut and subtle nutty oak flavours. Impressive purity and power with good cellaring potential although it can certainly be appreciated now"
