2024 Mouton Rothschild Pauillac En Primeur

En Primeur product: order now for arrival mid 2027. A Bordeaux red that defines the term "legendary". Brooding dark fruits and earthy spice remain tightly bound in the wine's sinewy tannins and pure potential. Presence and generosity in the making. Stocks are infinitesimal. Unlike other retailers (who charge a second payment on arrival), our En Primeur prices are the total and final landed cost, including GST. With the changing economic situation and foreign exchange risk, we do this to ensure you have complete certainty over what you will pay.

Its Origins
Vines first appeared on what is now known as the Mouton-Rothschild estate in the early 18th century. Throughout the 18th century and first half of the 19th the quality of the wines increased steadily, often equalling those of the other top wines of Bordeaux, save for a short period of decline in the 1840s. This temporary fall from grace was to cost Mouton its likely status as a First Growth wine when the 1855 Classification was published, since the rankings were decided upon by the prices the wines had been fetching in the market place. The Rothschild family had bought the property in 1853, and its reputation was rapidly restored. The driving force, however, proved to be a later arrival, Baron Philippe de Rothschild, who assumed control in 1922. He was a dynamic figure who revolutionised much of the running of the estate. He was the first to introduce château-bottling, as early as 1924, and instigated the practice, after the Second World War, of employing a different artist each year to design the label. His greatest achievement was to have Mouton upgraded to 1st Growth Status in 1973, the only change ever to be made to the 1855 Classification. For decades the price of Mouton had matched, and frequently surpassed, that of the other First Growths, so the logic for the promotion was undeniable. Picasso was engaged to design that vintage’s label. Philippe died in 1988 and the estate passed into the hands of his daughter, Philippine.
What The Critics Say
97-98/100 James Suckling
“This shows plenty of drive with dusty and creamy tannins that run the length of the wine and builds at the end. It’s medium-bodied showing a focus and energy. Dark currants and flowers flavor. This really has length and it has the depth to improve with age. 93% cabernet sauvignon and 7% merlot.”
96/100 Decanter, Georgina Hindle
"Sweet blackcurrants, orange rind, violets, plums, cherry cream and some liquorice. Round and filling, this is dense and intense with prominent tannins, a juicy core and lots of structure. It’s forward and really intense with fine, mineral-edged tannins. Sophisticated and really generous, ample and persistent with such a fleshy mouthfeel. Zero wood. This is just brilliant - fresh, lively, zingy and ample. Lovely finesse too. There’s acidity for sure, but there’s creaminess to counter it. A marvelous Mouton. Ageing 100% new barrels, 18 months. 3.71pH." Drink 2032 - 2050
94-96/100 Vinous, Neal Martin
“The 2024 Mouton Rothschild, which has a little more Cabernet Sauvignon in the blend, was picked between September 23 and October 5 and aged for 18 months in 100% new oak. This has an understated bouquet with blackberry, cedar and graphite scents that take their time to unfold. The nose possesses very fine delineation though the oak is a little more prominent at the moment. The palate is medium-bodied and quite linear in style with fine tannins. A less flamboyant Mouton Rothschild in keeping with the style of the vintage, the 2024 discretely gains depth towards the finish and reveals a dash of white pepper on the aftertaste. Classy, very classy." Drink 2031 - 2059
