Its Origins

Felton Road is situated on warm, north facing slopes of glacial loess soils in Bannockburn, in the heart of Central Otago. It dates back to 1991 when Stewart Elms planted the Elms Vineyard on Felton Road. Blair Walter has been winemaker here since 1996, right from the start. The total vineyard area is now at 32 hectares. The modern gravity fed winery receives 100% estate grown fruit from its three vineyards that are all farmed biodynamically and are fully certified by Demeter. Minimal intervention in the winemaking with such practices as wild yeast, no fining or filtration, allow the unique vineyard characters to further express their considerable personality. Since the first vintage in 1997, Felton Road has acquired a formidable worldwide reputation.

What The Critics Say

Winemaker notes on current 2024 vintage

"The first encounter tells you it could only be Block 3. Characteristic spice and herbs, dark cherry, leather and mocha. The superb 2024 vintage shows the place clearer than ever, delivered in a wine that’s poised as well as profound. Cascades of deep dark fruit on the palate build to reveal real authority rather than just weight. The tannins are waiting, providing a framework for the depth of fruit, then ultimately giving a sustained, indulgent finish. An emphatically opulent Block 3 with the potential to be benchmark."

97/100 Cameron Douglas MS (2023 vintage)

"Soft, ripe, pure fruited and floral, a bouquet that speaks of place then unfurls just a little to reveal core varietal scents of dark red berries, baked cherries and currants then wild flowers and soft clay earth idea. On the palate a wine of texture with polished chalky tannins and sweet acidity engaging the senses first. This is followed by flavours that reflect the bouquet, plus dried herb and a fine savoury spice, some smoky oak layers and youthful energy. Complex, taut and dry, lengthy and new."

97/100 Stephen Wong MW (2023 vintage)

"Restrained wood with floral, dried herb and mineral complexity over a core of concentrated black fruit. Unquestionable elegance married to remarkable power, the intensely flavoursome palate unfolds in stages of savoury, fruit and floral, all kept in check by reasonably firm, ripe tannins with flashes of rosemary. Astounding complexity in a poised package. Medium-bodied but very long, this wine is all about the back-palate; there is plenty of matter here and it's currently very young. Despite the sheer concentration in evidence, this has impeccable balance and should age gracefully over the coming decade without losing its finesse"
