2024 Easthope Two Terraces Gamay Pinot Noir

93 Points Richard Caro
In stock
A juicy Gamay noir from one of Hawkes Bay's most esteemed winemakers. Rod Easthope makes this Gamay Noir in a very hands-on way, to produce fruit of such quality that it does not need sulfur at bottling. That also allows the delicious vibrancy of the wine's flavours to shine in their full harmony. Refreshing and classy, this is a top-rung kiwi Gamay.

What The Critics Say

Winemaker notes on current 2024 vintage

"The 2024 vintage delivered beautifully ripe, small-berried fruit. In the glass, it’s deeply coloured with heady aromas of red plum, raspberry, rose petal, and spice. The palate is silky and seductive on entry, building to a surprisingly long, structured finish. Equally good solo or with food—serve it slightly chilled and let it speak for itself. In 1395, Duke Philippe the Bold exiled Gamay from Burgundy in favour of Pinot Noir, dividing two noble varieties that once shared a home. Centuries later—and quite unintentionally—we’ve brought them back together. Our tenth vintage working with Gamay was meant to be just that—Gamay. But after harvest, DNA testing revealed that some of the vines we thought were Gamay were, in fact, Pinot Noir. A happy mistake. The result? A serendipitous blend that closes a 600-year-old loop in the most delicious way. Philippe would be livid. Sourced from the meticulously farmed Two Terraces Vineyard in Maraekakaho, this single-vineyard wine was made with our signature artisanal approach: hand-harvested, whole-bunch fermented, foot-stomped, and matured in seasoned puncheons."

93/100 Bob Campbell MW (2021 vintage)

"Deliciously fruity wine in a pinot-esque sort of way. Cherry/berry and subtle fresh herb flavours supported by fine tannins that give a pleasantly dry finish. Simple, accessible wine that's about as serious as gamay gets."
