A great price on this show-stopping wine from the excellent 2024 vintage. A previous vintage of the Beachhead scooped Champion Wine and Champion Chardonnay at the New Zealand International Wine Show, beating out such wines as Clearview Reserve, Villa Reserve, Esk Winemaker's Reserve, Giesen Clayvin and Te Kairanga's John Martin. This is another classy Beachhead with elegant freshness wrapped in creamy, toasty goodness. Delicious, this Beachhead Chardonnay is a no-brainer!

Its Origins

In 1986 Tim Turvey purchased a property at Te Awanga, Hawke’s Bay. Together with business partner Helma van den Berg, they hand grafted and planted the first vines in the winter of 1988. Clearview Estate Winery Ltd was established for the first red wine vintage in 1989. Vineyard plantings continued at 3 acres per annum. Tim and Helma also designed and built the winery, adding to the cellar door and restaurant as the business grew. The Estate grows 11 grape varieties from 19.4 hectares (48 acres) of Te Awanga vineyards. They intensively manage and prune their vines for low yields of quality fruit. The seaside location has a moderating influence and they often enjoy an extended ripening period well into autumn. The clay and loam soils sit over deep beds of free draining river shingle. Leased land at Gimblett Road provides Cabernet Sauvignon and Syrah.

What The Critics Say

92/100 Stephen Wong MW

"Subtle on the nose: a hint of cream, wet stone, flint, lemonade apple and grilled citrus with whiffs of roasted nuts. The palate enters with fairly powerful presence, lightened by a slight spritziness before firm phenolics and wood tannins close in. Roasted cashew flavours emerge late on the palate, sitting alongside ripe apple. Medium-bodied and currently closed but it will come together in the next few months. The finish has sustained length and a refreshing balance of acidity so it will have no trouble developing more complexity in bottle 29 May 2025." Drink 2025 - 2031

Champion Wine of the Show, New Zealand International Wine Show (2019 vintage)

"Light yellow gold with tropical fruit, roasted nuts and buttery oak filling the fragrant bouquet and continuing through to the juicy palate where sizzled butter and peach perfectly balance the nutty, mealy, savoury notes. Touches of grapefruit accent the full-bodied, creamy and deliciously long, mouthfilling finish."
