2024 Ch. Haut Bailly Pessac-Leognan En Primeur

En Primeur product: order now for arrival mid 2027. From the "top eschelons of Pessac-Leognan" (BBR), Haut Bailly is becoming hard to get. They are possesed of a lovely terroir of high gravels, from which they produce a Cabernet-led expression that is expressive and at the same time notably elegant and "silky". With relative approachability but also a great deal of potential for graceful development in cellar, the Haut Bailly promises to become a timeless addition to any collection. Unlike other retailers (who charge a second payment on arrival), our En Primeur prices are the total and final landed cost, including GST. With the changing economic situation and foreign exchange risk, we do this to ensure you have complete certainty over what you will pay.

Its Origins
Château Haut-Bailly is a Graves Cru Classé estate that has really hit form in the last 5-7 years. Haut-Bailly was bought by the Sanders family in 1955 and was run by Jean Sanders until 1998 when Robert G. Wilmers, an American banker, purchased it. It is located in the commune of Léognan, which is usually more associated with white wine production. Haut-Bailly has 28 hectares of vineyards which are very well sited on high, gravelly ground just east of Léognan village. The wine is a blend of Cabernet Sauvignon (65%), Merlot (25%) and Cabernet Franc (10%). It is matured in small oak barriques (50% new) for 15 months and is bottled unfined and unfiltered. Ch. Haut-Bailly makes small quantities of a rosé from 100% Cabernet Sauvignon, preferring to use the single varietal to maintain freshness in the blend. The wine is fermented 1/3 in new oak barrels and 2/3 in stainless steel at 16°C. Haut-Bailly is renowned for its smoothness and silkiness but, since the mid 1990s, the wines have better depth of fruit as well as more grip, concentration and body. They are now amongst the top echelons of Pessac-Léognan wines. (BBR)
What The Critics Say
95-97/100 The Wine Independent, Lisa Perrotti-Brown
"Deep garnet-purple colored. Comes bounding out with exuberant notes of black cherries and fresh black currants, plus hints of violets, dark chocolate, and menthol with a waft of crushed rocks. The medium-bodied palate is coated with bright blackberry flavors, supported by soft, silky tannins and plenty of freshness, finishing long and perfumed. 40% Merlot, 58% Cabernet Sauvignon, 2% Cabernet Franc."
93-95/100 Vinous, Neal Martin
"The 2024 Haut-Bailly was picked from September 25 to October 4 and matured in 50% new oak, possibly with a shorter élevage. As usual, it deserves patience at this stage as it gradually opens and coheres with aeration. This has a perfumed bouquet built around redcurrant, cranberry and wild strawberry fruit. It's quite floral in style with finely delineated touches of freshly-rolled tobacco and wilted rose petal. The palate is creamy on the entry and velvety in texture, with finely chiseled, lace-like tannins. It is very well balanced with one of the few sensual vintages that you will find from this year. This will be much earlier drinking than other vintages, but that does not detract from what will be one of the most pleasurable 2024s to drink." Drink 2030 - 2055

"A soft, light Haut-Bailly from this challenging year, with lots of red cherries, red berries, red bell peppers and fresh herbs. Quite approachable, with a medium body and soft-grained tannins. Well-judged soft extraction makes this likely approachable right after release. Not ambitious, but well balanced, juicy and refined. Brambly and lively. Early harvest? 58% cabernet sauvignon, 40% merlot and 2% cabernet franc."
