2024 Astrolabe Marlborough Pinot Gris

Grape
Pinot Gris
Its Origins
Astrolabe was created in 1996 by winemaker Simon Waghorn, the culmination of a career that began in South Australia in 1982. Winemaking later led Simon and his family from Te Kauwhata to Gisborne, where he specialised in Chardonnay, and eventually to Marlborough where in 1996 he and his wife Jane Forrest-Waghorn joined with old friends Paul Davenport and Sally Lewis to have a go at their own label…and so began Astrolabe. Today they work with a number of growers scattered all over Marlborough, from Awatere valley to the Kekerengu coast to the Wairau Valley, developing a wide portfolio of iconic wines that celebrate the varieties and terroirs of Marlborough.
What The Critics Say
93/100 Cameron Douglas MS (2022 vintage)
"Classic aromas and flavours of green pear and quince with a citrus tone and fine lees complexities. Just dry on the palate with a delicate sugar tickle, flavours mirror the bouquet and the lees, along with acidity and core fruit sweetness add mouthfeel and texture. Delicious, fresh and ready with best drinking from 2024 through 2026+."
91/100 Stephen wong Mw
"Showing some restraint to the floral, crisp pear and quince flavours, this light and airy pinot gris is just off-dry, given structure by fine, powdery phenolics which dry to white pepper. Subtle, savoury lees influence in the tarte tatin spectrum provide texture for the taut, saline acidity. Lovely balance in a light-weight, elegant and crisp package which will gain more complexity in the near-term 10 Feb 2025." Drink 2025 - 2030
