2023 Valli Bannockburn Pinot Noir

Grape
Pinot Noir
Its Origins
Valli is the personal vocation of pioneering Otago winemaker, Grant Taylor. Grant’s name is synonymous with Otago Pinot Noir. He has been crafting wines in the region since 1993 when there were only 20 hectares planted - today there are over 1700. Grant’s accomplishments are well known in the wine world and he is credited with winning the Best Pinot Noir Trophy at a major International Wine Competition in London an unprecedented four times – a feat achieved by no other winemaker in the world. During the past 19 years he has made the first wines for a number of iconic Otago wineries, but now the serious focus is on his own creation, Valli. Established in 1998 and named after his Great-Great Grandfather, Giuseppe Valli, who immigrated to New Zealand from and Italian winemaking background, Grant founded Valli with the aim of creating true representations of Otago’s subregions with unflinching intensity and purity.
What The Critics Say
97/100 Raymond Chan Reviews, Candice Chow
"Moderately deep ruby-red with a dark core, even colour throughout. The nose is alluring and slowly evolving with aromas of red cherry, plum, lifted floral notes, mineral, spices and forest floor. Medium-bodied, with aromas of red cherry and plum interweaved with medicinal herbs, liquorice, lavender, mushroom and cinnamon. The sweet, pure fruit reveals depth and lifted aromatics, layering whole bunches' floral and herbaceous details. Velvety tannins provide an opulent grip and vitality, linger to a long, savoury finish. This broody Bannockburn Pinot Noir is harmonious, well-structured and refined. Match with rack of lamb and roasted duck over the next 15 years. Fruit from Felton Road & Hall Road, fermented with 35% whole bunch, aged 11 months in French oak barrels, 27% new oak. 13.5% alc. 19.5-/20 pts (97 pts) Apr 2025." Drink 2025 - 2040
97/100 Wine Orbit, Sam Kim
"Wonderfully fruited and lifted, the bouquet shows dark berry, cured meat, tar, olive, and hazelnut aromas. This leads to a wonderfully weighted palate delivering terrific fruit intensity with gorgeous complexity. Wonderfully framed by silky texture and layers of polished tannins, it is bold and sturdy with a super-long, harmonious finish. At its best: 2026 to 2038. www.valliwine.com. April 2025." Drink 2026 - 2038
95/100 Cameron Douglas MS
“Outstanding - Fantastic bouquet with a plush and elegance then ripe fruit scents of baked raspberry and boysenberry. Sweet oak layers the dark rose and clove spice layers. Dry on the palate with a core of ripe red berry fruit, fine tannins in abundance and acid line for length and freshness. Well-made and delicious, a drink now and age worthy example with best drinking from 2027 through 2037+.”
