Its Origins

"Joval Wines has been a major player in the wine import/distribution scene for decades with a dedicated focus on establishing several wine brands in the the Yarra Valley. It was only a matter of time before it added a winery to expand the range, including a new label. Enter Southern Lights Vineyards. Previously known as Long Gully Estate, an established winery with vineyards, it is the new home of Joval Wine’s suite of cool-climate wines from the Mornington Peninsula and Yarra Valley. Serious inroads are being undertaken, comprised of new plantings and thoughtful viticulture alongside a commitment to quality." Halliday's Wine Companion

What The Critics Say

95+/100 The Wine Front, Gary Walsh

"From a vineyard in Main Ridge, planted 1990. I tasted the 2022 Chardonnay last week (I think), and I like this 2023 more. It’s a refined wine though it strikes me as having just about enough of everything, and not too much of anything. Grapefruit, green melon, a little cedar and cinnamon, mint and chamomile. It has crunch and energy, a gentle gloss, flinty grip, hazelnut, a saline element with some green olive and lemon zest on a finish of excellent length and precision. Outstanding, and more importantly, so good to drink. Thirst quenching. Touch and go for 96 points." Drink 2025 - 2033+

95/100 Campbell Mattinson

"The delicacy, the length, the inherent power, the character. From the first sip we’re away and we’re flying. Pears, grapefruit, lemon, cedar and rushes of nutty, flinty, tonic-like nuances. There’s nothing in-your-face about this wine, it’s an example of elegance plus plus, and yet a few sips in and it’s all you can think about. Besides, the finish of this wine – and the long curl of it – is the real deal. The vines this wine was grown on were planted in 1990, and every speck of this wine feels mature, considered and at peace with the world. Go you good thing. This wine is beautiful."

95/100 James Suckling

"So pure and focused with aromas of lemon pith, hazelnuts, green melon, grapefruit, baking spices and flint. The medium-bodied palate has high-tension acidity and generous mouthfeel, showing orange blossoms, green apples, lime curd and salted nuts. Lovely energy and minerality will unravel nicely for years to come. Drink or hold."
