2023 Sandrone Nebbiolo d'Alba Valmaggiore

A beautiful and distinctive expression of this great varietal. Sandrone is a developing master of the incredibly steep Valmaggiore vineyard in Roero, where the family has made a strong commitment. Across the river from Barolo, these lighter sandy soils produce a less tannic, more fragrant and fruity Nebbiolo comparable to Pinot Noir in style. A superb intro to the Sandrone style.

Its Origins

The Sandrone winery was founded in 1978, born from a desire to make the finest possible expression of the Nebbiolo grape from the unique terroirs of the Langhe. In late 1977, Luciano was able to purchase a first small part of the Cannubi vineyard. The following year (1978) he began making minute quantities of his own wine in the garage of his parents’ home, testing and refining his ideas about how to make a wine of distinction and high quality that respected the traditions of the Barolo, while incorporating many of the new technological innovations that were being used to make Barolo less forbidding and hard. With the 1989 and 1990 vintages, Luciano Sandrone caught the attention of the world with his Barolo Cannubi Boschis, made in minute quantities from his great estate vineyard site, which received 97 and 100 points from Robert Parker. This was one of the first perfect scores given to a Barolo. Currently the estate farms a total of 27 hectares, 75% of which are owned, and produces between 90-100,000 bottles (about 8,000 twelve-bottle cases) per year. Sustainable/organic.

What The Critics Say

94/100 Falstaff

"Light ruby red with garnet-red reflections. Orange, watermelon and raspberry on the nose, with violets and a hint of spice in the background. Fresh and juicy on the palate, with fine tannins, well-balanced and a medium-long finish."

93/100 Kerin O'Keefe

"Even in a difficult year like 2023, Sandrone made a beautiful Valmaggiore. Showing the fragrance and finesse this celebrated site in Roero is known for, it opens with heady scents of violet, forest berry, spice and pine forest. All about elegant restraint, the polished, savory palate features ripe Morello cherry, succulent cranberry, white pepper and star anise alongside polished tannins. An orange zest note lends a tangy finish. Drink through 2028. Abv: 13.5%." Drink 2025 - 2028

91/100 JamesSuckling.com, Aldo Fiordelli

"A layered wine with red currants, red cherries, licorice and dried flowers on the nose. Light-bodied, this shows savoriness with an overall austere structure and a crisp and balanced finish. Drink or hold."
