2023 Pyramid Valley Earth Smoke Pinot Noir

Grape
Pinot Noir
Its Origins
As described in Robert Parker's Wine Advocate by Lisa Perrotti-Brown: "You may think you know New Zealand wines but I can assure you that until you have tasted Pyramid Valley, you have no idea. When I first sampled the earliest releases from this left-of-center producer... there was a spark of “otherness” about the wines that was so unlike anything else in New Zealand." From their website: "Mike and Claudia Elze Weersing spent 15 years searching the world to find the perfect place to grow grapes. In 2000, they purchased the plot of land near Waikari, that we now call home. German-born and America-raised Claudia, was a committed biodynamicist and the guiding spirit on the land in the early years of Pyramid Valley. Mike studied oenology and viticulture in Burgundy and worked in vineyards and cellars across Europe, honing his precise vision and practice for spectacular winemaking. Together, Mike and Claudia created remarkable wines for close to 20 years that have been recognised the world over. Fast-forward to 2017, when good friends Steve Smith and Brian Sheth realised their long-held vision of creating a wine dream together. That dream was to craft impeccable wines and inspiring experiences they could share. Steve and Brian were honoured to take on the legacy of Pyramid Valley and craft their own family of Pinot Noir and Chardonnay wines."
What The Critics Say
97/100 The Weekend Australian, Nick Ryan
"In other circumstances this wine would command every inch on this page to sing its praises. It’s among the best pinots I’ve tasted all year. A harvest diminished by frost has delivered great complexity, if not quantity. Sour cherries, wild berries and dried porcini, tightening through a fine, granular finish dusted with exotic spice."
95/100 Vinous, Rebecca Gibb MW
"The 2023 Pinot Noir Earth Smoke is tender and transparent, mellow and mouth-filling. Restrained in expression within the context of the New World, it is a little reductive, herbal (with the agave-like flavor of good tequila) and fruity with strawberry and red cherry flavors. The palate is mouthwateringly fresh, with chalky tannins leaving a fine powdery veil. This is pure, satisfying and the essence of its terroir. It does feel rather fragile, and as such, my drinking window is currently set for the next ten years." Drink 2025 - 2035
17.5+/20 JancisRobinson.com, Tamlyn Currin (2019 vintage)
"Smells like late-summer roses on the cusp of a heavy summer thunderstorm, hot tar simmering in the heat, black-violet sky towering overhead. Tastes like petrichor, like a lick of rain-wet gravel, like bacon smoke and cranberries rubbed on old platinum. The tannins feel like old stained-glass windows in a stone chapel, bending the light through ruby, azure, emerald, honey lead-laced diamonds. A pin-prick of blood on an earth-stained finger, and someone paused to write a word in charcoal on a cold rock, left a rose petal behind. (TC)."
