2023 Felton Road Calvert Pinot Noir

94 Points John Caro
In stock
A superb Pinot Noir from one of the country's most famous vineyards. Felton's production of Calvert can't keep up with demand, so we are always thankful to receive a small parcel of this wine. The consistent and free-draining soils of the Calvert Vineyard are located at a relatively low elevation, and this heat allows the fruit to consistently achieve an even and generous ripeness. A Pinot of immense presence and structure, the Calvert is a serious prospect for the decanter or the medium-term cellar. Collect now — this will fly!

Its Origins

Felton Road is situated on warm, north facing slopes of glacial loess soils in Bannockburn, in the heart of Central Otago. It dates back to 1991 when Stewart Elms planted the Elms Vineyard on Felton Road. Blair Walter has been winemaker here since 1996, right from the start. The total vineyard area is now at 32 hectares. The modern gravity fed winery receives 100% estate grown fruit from its three vineyards that are all farmed biodynamically and are fully certified by Demeter. Minimal intervention in the winemaking with such practices as wild yeast, no fining or filtration, allow the unique vineyard characters to further express their considerable personality. Since the first vintage in 1997, Felton Road has acquired a formidable worldwide reputation.

What The Critics Say

Winemaker notes on current 2023 vintage

"Characteristic floral notes of rose petal and violets are complimented by hints of cola, cardamom and polished leather. A sweet core of red cherry through the mid provides an elegant backbone in this finesse driven wine. Being not excessively fruited, allows the typical Calvert mineral laden fine tannins to take centre stage, leading to a sustained and memorable finish."

95/100 James Suckling (2022 vintage)

"Fantastic clarity and transparency in this wine with fresh strawberries and cherries. So bright. Medium to full body with very fine tannins that are integrated and energetic. From biodynamically grown grapes with Demeter certification. Drink or hold. Screw cap."

95/100 Bob Campbell MW (2020 vintage)

"Elegant, firmly-structured pinot noir with floral, spice, plum and red cherry flavours. Youthful and a little closed at this stage but with the potential to develop well with bottle age. Aerate for best results. 16 SEP 2021."
