2023 Donnhoff Roxheimer Hollenpfad EL Trocken

94 Points Antonio Galloni's Vinous
In stock
A superb dry German Riesling from a special vineyard and a great producer. The Roxheimer is a Premier Cru (Erse Lage) site located on a little side branch of the Nahe Valley with a steep, south-facing aspect. Rare soils of weathered red sandstone allow the old vines a deep root growth and stable water supply. The ripeness manages to retain a distinct brightness, purity and precision, balanced by layers of mineral flavour and finely tuned acid structure. Very complete and harmonious, the Roxheimer Hollenpfad is a bit of a stand-out on value and X factor.

Its Origins

Hailed by the likes of Robert Parker and Hugh Johnson and named Gault Millau Winemaker of the Year in 1999, Helmut Donnhoff is regarded in German Riesling circles as a super-star. And if you’re thinking that term is somehow an oxymoron, you’d probably find Helmut agrees. With the affable humility and deep deference to his vineyards of someone whose family have been making wine since 1750, Donnhoff believes that “winemaking alone cannot bring quality, it can only retain the available quality.” Wine is made in the vineyard, and from taking the helm in 1971 to the present Helmut has grown the family holdings from 4 hectares to a still modest 20 hectares of lovingly managed vineyards. 80% of which are Rielsing (many of them Erste Lage or Grand Cru) with the other 20%, reflecting Nahe’s less austere climates and more mixed clay and volcanic soils, given to Pinot Gris and Pinot Blanc. But Riesling is king, with Helmut Donnhoff’s many classics from the steeper slate soils having themselves played a prominent role, over the last forty years, in formalising Nahe’s reputation as Germany’s third region for consistently premium and Grand Cru wines.

What The Critics Say

94/100 Vinous, Anne Krebiehl MW

“The 2023 Riesling Roxheimer Höllenpfad is harvested from around 50-year-old vines on steep, south-facing Permian red sandstone. It’s made half and half in neutral wood and stainless steel. Lovely savor spreads from the glass with notions of yarrow crushed against stone. The palate is slender but concentrated and vivid, with a juiciness that has something of apple, something of herbal tisane, something of tart orange zest; all are beautifully taut and elongated. The 2023 is understated and lovely, with a savory zestiness on the clean-cut finish. (Bone-dry).” Drink 2028 - 2050

“Fine, red sandstone on a very steep southern slope, further from the river. Very old vines. Complex and vibrant, with a slew of floral (think honeysuckle and wild rose) and spicy aromas, this is a really exciting medium-bodied dry riesling. Terrific drive and energy push this over the palate at a brisk clip, but behind this is a deep crushed-rock character that pulls you into the extremely long and bright finish. Drink or hold."

17+/20 JancisRobinson.com, Paula Sidore

"Erste Lage. Tank sample. Stony, spicy and cool. A delicate daisy chain crowns the complex and concentrated citrus core. Ripe, balanced acidity. Stunning momentum with a chiselled and crystalline bitterness. Sublime. (PS)." Drink 2025 - 2033
